FULL SPECTRUM ON A DRONE PART 1
Some time ago I had the idea of taking infrared and full spectrum pictures with the drone. I searched for images, but found none. But I'm probably not the first and only one who came up with this crazy idea.
At first I had the plan to remove the hot mirror filter from the drone's camera. I tried to find information on the internet about the construction of the camera. I found exactly nothing. I also didn't want to destroy the camera. So I had to find another solution. I bought a GoPro Hero 2 on Ebay for €31. The next step was to unscrew the lens from the GoPro. That turned out to be very difficult. The previous owner had used some kind of brutal cleaner to clean the camera. The plastic parts had melted together. So I had to destroy the spacer to get the lens out of the camera.
Vor einiger Zeit kam ich auf die Idee mit der Drohne Infrarot und Full Spectrum Bilder aufzunehmen. Ich suchte nach Bildern, fand aber keine. Aber vermutlich bin ich trotzdem nicht der Erste und Einzige der auf diese bekloppte Idee gekommen ist.
Zuerst hatte ich den Plan, das Hot Mirror Filter aus der Kamera der Drohne auszubauen. Ich versuchte im Internet Informationen über den Aufbau der Kamera zu finden. Ich fand genau gar nichts. Ich wollte die Kamera auch nicht zerstören. Also musste eine andere Lösung her. Ich ersteigerte bie Ebay eine GoPro Hero 2 für 31€. Im nächsten Schritte wollte ich das Objektiv aus der GoPro schrauben. Das gestaltete sich sehr schwierig. Der Vorbesitzer hatte irgendeinen brutalen Reiniger benutzt um die Kamera zu putzen. Die Kunststoffteile waren miteinander verschmolzen. Ich musste also den Abstandshalter zerstören um die Linse aus der Kamera heraus zu bekommen.
Afterwards, the camera looked very battered. A quick interim test: it still works. Next I wanted to remove the Hot Mirror filter. This is mounted on the end of the lens and should therefore be quite easy to remove. On the newer GoPro models, the hot mirror is mounted in the middle of the lens. I don't think it can be removed.
Danach sah die Kamera sehr ramponiert aus. Ein kurzer Zwischentest: sie funktioniert noch. Als Nächstes wollte ich das Hot Mirror Filter entfernen. Diese ist am Ende der Linse montiert und sollte sich somit recht einfach entfernen lassen. Bei den neueren GoPro Modellen ist das Hot Mirror mitten im Objetkiv verbaut. Ich denke nicht, dass es sich entfernen lässt.
Unfortunately, the plan did not work. The hot mirror filter did not detach from the rear lens. So I ordered a replacement lens for about 5€. This was built differently from the original lens. With a bit of force, the Hit Mirror Filter came off. It is better to wear protective goggles so that no glass splinters land in the eye.
Leider hat der Plan nicht funktioniert. Das Hot Mirror Filter löste sich nicht von der hinteren Linse. Also bestellte ich ein Ersatzobjektiv für ca. 5€. Dieses war anders aufgebaut als das Originalobjektiv. Mit ewtas Gewalt löste sich das Hit Mirror Filter. Man sollte besser eine Schutzbrille tragen damit keine Glassplitter im Auge landen.
I then cleaned the sensor of the GoPro and screwed the new lens back into the camera. I connected the camera to the TV with an HDMI cable to adjust the focus. It was not that easy because the light of the visible and the invisible spectrum were not focused in the same position of the lens. After I had decided on an acceptable compromise, I fixed the lens with hot glue.
Im Anschluss reinigte ich den Sensor der GoPro und schraubte dann die neue Linse wieder in die Kamera. Ich schloss die Kamera mit einem HDMI Kabel an den Fernseher an um den Fokus wieder richtig einzustelln. Ganz so einfach war das nicht weil das Licht des sichtbaren und des unsichtbaren Spektrums nicht in der gleichen Stellung des Objektivs fokussiert waren. Nachdem ich mich für einen aktzeptablen Kompromiss entschieden hatte fixierte ich das Objektiv mit Heißkleber.
I ordered a 680nm filter with a 37mm thread right after I bought the GoPro. Unfortunately, the filter has not yet arrived here. But I have already made a holder on the 3D printer. As soon as the filter arrives, it will be attached to the GoPro and then to the drone. I hope to be able to show you the first infrared aerial images in a few days.
Ich hatte gleich nach dem Kauf der GoPro einen 680nm Filter mit einem Gewinde von 37mm bestellt. Leider ist das Filter bisher noch nicht hier angekommen. Aber ich habe schonmal einen Halter auf dem 3D Drucker hergestellt. Sobald das Filter da ist kommt das an die GoPro und diese dann an die Drohne. Ich hoffe, dass ich euch dann in einigen Tagen die ersten Infrarot Luftbilder zeigen kann.
A first test shot without filter looks quite good. The green channel of the sensor is obviously almost only excited by infrared light. The limitations of the GoPro are quite large. The camera does not record in RAW format and the white balance cannot be changed either. You can only take the pictures as they are, apart from minor corrections.
Most of my projects work not smoothly and straight away. In the end, this project has worked relatively smoothly so far. I hope the drone doesn't crash on the first flight with the GoPro mounted then.
Ein erster Testshot ohne Filter sieht schonmal ganz gut aus. Der grüne Kanal des Sensors wird offensichtlich fast nur noch von infrarotem Licht angeregt. Die Einschränkungen der GoPro sind recht groß. Die Kamera nimmt nicht im RAW-Format auf und der Weißabgleich lässt sich ebenfalls nicht ändern. Man kann die Bilder nur so nehmen wie sie sind, von kleineren Korrekturen mal abgesehen.
Die meisten meiner Projekte funktionieren nicht reibungslos und auf Anhieb. Letztendlich hat dieses Projekt bisher relativ reibungslos funktioniert. Ich hoffe, die Drohne stürzt dann nicht gleich beim ersten Flug mit der montierten GoPro ab.
