Friday Rotation - Light Art Photography on HIVE

CAMERA ROTATION

On my trip to the centre of Berlin yesterday, @stepko accompanied me. It was very pleasant not to be alone for a change. I had chosen an illuminated building near the Berlin government district. The building is on Kapelle-Ufer. However, the illuminated rings on the building are quite dimly lit. Because everything around it is quite brightly lit and cars drive continuously through the picture, it was not such an easy task. I would have liked to have the illuminated rings more clearly in the picture.

Bei meinem gestrigen Ausflug in die Berliner Innenstadt hat @stepko mich begleitet. Das war sehr angenehm zur Abwechslung mal nicht alleine unterweges zu sein. Ich hatte ein beleuchtetes Gebäude in der Nähe des Berliner Regierungsviertels ausgesucht. Das Haus steht am Kapelle-Ufer. Die beleuchteten Ringe an dem Gebäude sind allerdings recht schwach beleuchtet. Weil alles rund herum recht hell leuchtet und fortlaufend Autos durchs Bild fahren war das keine ganz so einfache Aufgabe. Ich hätte die leuchtenden Ringe gerne deutlicher im Bild gehabt.

In this picture, hardly anything of the building is still recognisable. I could have taken a picture like this at pretty much any other intersection. The most of the light comes from the lanterns, traffic lights and passing cars.

In diesem Bild ist vom Gebäude kaum noch etwas erkennbar. Ein solches Bild hätte ich auch an so ziemlich jeder anderen Straßenkreuzung aufnehmen können. Das meiste Licht stammt von den Laternen, Ampeln und vorbeifahrenden Autos.

Here you can see the simplest version of the camera rotation technique. I rotated the camera 180° during the exposure. During the rotation I covered the lens with a cap so that no light traces could be seen.

Hier seht ihr die einfachste Variante der Camera Rotation Technik. Ich habe die Kamera während der Belichtung um 180° gedreht. Während des Drehens hatte ich das Objektiv mit einer Mütze abgedeckt damit man keine Lichtspuren sieht.

In this shot I had shifted the centre of the image a little and exposed it a little longer because it was already dark in the meantime.

Bei dieser Aufnahme hatte ich den Mittelpunkt des Bildes etwas verschoben und etwas länger belichtet weil es mittlerweile schon dunkel war.

Afterwards I did rotations with more steps. Finally, I show you the scene without rotation.

Im Anschluß habe ich dann Rotationen mit mehr Schritten gemacht. Zum Schluß zeige ich euch noch die Szene ohne Rotation.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
