ROTATE THE MALTHOUSE
I was already out and about with @stepko and @candelart on Friday. You can find the article here: The Ruin. On Saturday, Hans Roufflair came to Berlin. We met in the evening at the Malzfabrik. As always, I had a lot of fun with you crazy people. I'd especially like to thank Dominic for making this special experience possible.
Mit @stepko und @candelart war ich schon am Freitag unterwegs. Den Beitrag findest du hier: The Ruin. Am Sonnabend kam dann Hans Roufflair noch nach Berlin. Wir trafen uns abends in der Malzfabrik. Es hat mir wir immer wahnsinnigen Spaß mit euch Verrückten gemacht. Ganz besonders danke ich Dominic, dass er uns dieses besondere Erlebnis ermöglicht hat.

For some years now, I have mostly been spared failures in light painting. I usually have the planned picture on the memory card by the third attempt at the latest. Not so on this night. I could not realise the first planned picture. The other planned pictures I didn't even try to realise. Pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong. @stepko and I climbed the stairs to the room in the picture. It was about 35°C in this room. It stank of pigeon shit. The idea was to put a light object in the big metal funnel. Actually not a very difficult task.
Seit einigen Jahren bleibe ich ja meist von Mißerfolgen im Lightpainting verschont. Gewöhnlich habe ich das geplante Bild spätestens beim dritten Versuch auf der Speicherkarte. Nicht so in dieser Nacht. Das erste geplante Bild konnte ich nicht umsetzen. Die anderen geplanten Bildern habe ich gar nicht erst versucht umzusetzen. Es ging so ziemlich alles schief, was schiefgehen kann. @stepko und ich stiegen die Treppen bis zu dem Raum im Bild hoch. In diesem Raum waren ca. 35°C. Es stank nach Taubenscheiße. Die Idee war ein Lichtobjekt in den großen Metalltrichter zu setzen. Eigentlich keine besonders schwierige Aufgabe.
There are a total of 4 identical rooms with these large metal funnels. In the picture you can see another room. In the room from the light painting, the funnel points towards the entrance door.
First I pointed the camera at the funnel. Then we set up a second tripod with a rotating device. Then we attached the RGB Critter to it with an endlighten acrylic blade and @stepko shot it. After each rotation, I turned the camera 60° around the optical axis. It looked like this:
Es gibt insgesamt 4 gleiche Räume mit diesen großen Metalltrichtern. Im Bild ist ein anderer Raum zu sehen. Im Raum aus dem Lightpainting zeigt der Trichter Richtung Eingangstür.
Zuerst habe ich die Kamera auf den Trichter ausgerichtet. Danach haben wir ein zweites Stativ mit einer Drehvorrichtung aufgestellt. An dieser dann die RGB Critter mit einem endlighten Acryl Blade befestigt und @stepko hat das dann gedreht. Nach jeder Umdrehung habe ich die Kamera 60° um die optische Achse gedreht. Das sah dann so aus:
Now the part just had to go over the funnel. Since the light structure in the test shot was a little too big, we increased the distance between the camera and the tripod with the rotating device. We then first shot the rotation, then I turned the camera towards the funnel and then illuminated the scene with the Emisar D18. You can see the result at the top. The light object was still too big and too deep. Up to this point, this was not unusual. It almost never fits on the first try.
Nun musste das Teil nur noch über den Trichter. Da das Lichtgebilde in der Testaufnahme etwas zu groß war vergrößerten wir den Abstand zwischen Kamera und dem Stativ mit der Drehvorrichtung. Wir nahmen dann zuerst die Rotation auf, dann drehte ich die Kamera in Richtung Trichter und leuchtete dann die Szene mit der Emisar D18 aus. Das Ergbnis könnt ihr ganz oben sehen. Das Lichtobjekt war immer noch zu groß und zu tief. Bis zu diesem Punkt war das nichts Ungewöhnliches. Beim ersten Versuch passt so etwas fast nie.
So we adjusted the position of the turning device and the orientation of the camera again. You can see the result above. Actually, the plan was to improve the result. Somehow it didn't work that night. After a smoke break we started the next attempt. There was a party in the courtyard. When I started to light the room, Roland Kaiser was playing loudly. Terrible pop music! 35° and that stench!. And as if that wasn't bad enough, a pigeon shat on my shoulder when I was lighting the funnel. That was too much. There was no point. I wouldn't get the picture on the memory card that night. We packed up all the stuff and went back down. @stepko then took some cool pictures in the cool, not pigeon shit stinking, basement. I joined Dominic in the courtyard with a beer.
Wir passten also die Position der Drehvorrichtung und die Ausrichtung der Kamera nochmal an. Das Ergebnis seht ihr oben. Eigentlich war der Plan das Ergebnis zu verbessern. Irgendwie lief es in dieser Nacht nicht. Nach einer Raucherpause starteten wir den nächsten Versuch. Auf dem Hof war eine Party. Als ich mit der Ausleuchtung des Raumes begann lief laut Roland Kaiser. Fürchterliche Schlager Musik! 35° und dieser Gestank!. Und als ob das nicht schon alles schlimm genug gewesen wäre schiss mir eine Taube auf die Schulter als ich den Trichter beleuchtete. Das war zu viel. Es hatte keinen Sinn. Ich würde das Bild in dieser Nacht nicht auf die Speicherkarte bekommen. Wir packten das ganze Zeug zusammen und gingen wieder runter. @stepko machte dann noch ein paar coole Bilder im kühlen, nicht nach Taubenscheiße stinkenden, Keller. Ich stetzte mich mit einem Bier zu Dominic auf den Hof.
When my bad mood had passed, I took some camera rotation pictures in the courtyard. The party lights were still on. The friendly technician asked if he should leave the lights on for me. I gratefully accepted the offer. There are attentive, friendly people even in Berlin. The night ended well after all. I'll show you the pictures in the next post.
Als meine schlechte Laune verflogen war machte ich dann auf dem Hof einige Kamera Rotation Bilder. Die Partybeleuchtung war noch eingeschaltet. Der freundliche Techniker fragte, ob er die Beleuchtung für mich noch eingeschaltet lassen soll. Dankend nahm ich das Angebot an. Es gibt sogar in Berlin aufmerksame, freundliche Menschen. Die Nacht nahm dann doch noch ein gutes Ende. Die Bilder zeige ich euch im nächsten Beitrag.

Ich glaube ich kenne den Grund warum es da oben nicht lief.... ROLAND KAISER 😣 Der Mistkerl kann einem auch alles verderben. 😉
Sollten wir nochmal in die Malzfabrik kommen, können wir die Bildidee ja nochmal in Angriff nehmen, dann aber mit vernünftiger Musik.
Ja und bei kühleren Temperaturen und mit Regenschirm um nicht vollgeschissen zu werden.
Die Temperaturen wären ja noch zu ertragen gewesen, aber die freche Taube und die Musik waren einfach zu viel. 😁

I know how you feel, so much dedication and effort can feel wasted if you aren't happy with the results. But we always go back for more and in the end it is nearly always a a fun night out. Great post fella 😎
