THE DIVING TOWER

Two days ago, together with Swen, I was once again on a deserted airfield of the Soviet armed forces in the GDR. The site was not completely abandoned. Part of it is used as an airfield and some buildings are used by various companies. The open-air swimming pool in the forest with the impressive diving tower, however, has not been used since the withdrawal of the Russian troops in 1994. Nature is slowly reclaiming the large concrete pool.

Gemeinsam mit Swen war ich vor zwei Tagen mal wieder auf einem verlassenen Flugplatz der sowjetischen Streitkräfte in der DDR unterwegs. Also so ganz verlassen war das Gelände nicht. Ein Teil wird als Flugplatz genutzt und einige Gebäude werden von verschiedenen Firmen genutzt. Das Freibad im Wald mit dem imposanten Sprungturm wird allerdings seit dem Abzug der russischen Truppen im Jahr 1994 nicht mehr genutzt. Die Natur erobert sich das große Betonbecken so langsam zurück.

Actually, we only wanted to explore the area in daylight and look for suitable light painting locations. We arrived in the early afternoon. At 4:30 pm it was already getting dark. I had taken the precaution of packing some torches and colour filters without having an exact plan of what to expect. Fortunately, you can get quite close to the pool by car, even though it is hidden in the middle of the forest.

Eigentlich wollten wir das Gelände nur bei Tageslicht erkunden und nach geeigneten Lightpainting Locations Auschau halten. Wir trafen am frühen Nachmitag ein. Um 16:30 Uhr wurde es bereits dunkel. Ich hatte vorsichtshalber einige Taschenlampen und Farbfilter eingepackt ohne einen genauen Plan zu haben, was uns dort erwartet. Glücklicherweise kommt man mit dem Auto recht nah an das Schwimmbad heran, auch wenn dieses versteckt mitten im Wald liegt.

At the first attempt I lit the trees on the left edge of the basin too much. So I then repeated the picture again. I first lit the scene around the deep area under the diving tower with the Emisar D18. In the second step, I lit the overgrown part under the diving tower with the Emisar D4K with a green colour filter. Then I walked to the diving tower. It doesn't look that far in the picture, does it? It's better not to walk directly along the Beckerand. The trees are right next to it. The danger of falling is great, especially in the dark. So every time I tried, I had to take a fairly long diversions through the dense forest.

Beim ersten Versuch habe ich die Bäume am linken Rand des Beckens zu stark beleuchtet. Ich habe also das Bild dann noch einmal wiederholt. Ich beleuchtet zuerst die Szene um den tiefen Bereich unter dem Sprungturm mit der Emisar D18. Im zweiten Schritt beleuchtete ich den mit Bäumen zugewachsenen Teil unter dem Sprungturm mit der Emisar D4K mit grünem Farbfilter. Danach lief ich zum Sprungturm. Im Bild sieht das gar nicht so weit aus, oder? Man sollte lieber nicht direkt am Beckerand entlag laufen. Die Bäume stehen direkt an diesem. Die Gefahr abzustürzen ist, gerade in der Dunkelheit groß. Also musste ich bei jedem Versuch einen ziemlich großen Umweg durch den dichten Wald laufen.

While I was waving the torches around, we had a spectator. A cat was watching from a safe distance. At some point she stood down in the recess of the pool and looked at me with wide eyes as I illuminated the area with the torch. Unfortunately, you can't see the cat in the picture. A model is somehow still missing from the picture, even though a water-shy cat doesn't necessarily fit into a swimming pool.

Während ich mit den Taschenlampen rumfuchtelte hatten wir eine Zuschauerin. Ein Katze beobachtete das Treiben aus sicherer Entfernung. Irgendwann stand sie dann unten in der Vertiefung des Schwimmbeckens und sah mich mit großen Augen an als ich den Bereich mit der Taschenlampe beleuchtete. Leider sieht man die Katze nicht im Bild. Ein Model fehlt irgendwie noch im Bild, auch wenn eine wasserscheue Katze nicht unbedingt in ein Schwimmbad passt.

Unfortunately, the ladder is missing from the lower part of the diving tower. I would have liked to climb up to be able to light the upper area better. Next time I'll take a ladder with me.

Leider fehlt im unteren Teil des Sprungturmes die Leiter. Ich wäre gerne nach oben geklettert um den oberen Bereich besser beleuchten zu können. Das nächste Mal nehme ich ein Leiter mit.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
