ACCIDENTS HAPPEN
Sometimes pretty much everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Last night I made my way to the nearby former railway site. The walk takes about 30 minutes. So I set off with the small luggage. I had the Camera Rotation Tool and the camera attached to the tripod. The tripod hung on the strap, camera down, over my shoulder. In my jacket pockets I had stowed the Emisar D4V2, the Noctigon DM11, suitable colour filters, replacement batteries for the torches and the camera, the radio remote trigger, a bottle of beer and some prisms. Halfway there, I noticed that the prisms did not fit the Laowa 12/2.8 I had attached to the camera. It has no filter thread. So the trip got off to a good start. When I arrived at the railway site, the centre column came loose from the tripod. The camera and CRT fell to the ground. There was grass at the spot and the camera survived the fall unharmed. 5 minutes earlier it would have fallen onto the hard concrete of the road. Luck of the draw, so to speak. However, the Camera Rotation Tool did not survive the fall unscathed. One of the screws had come loose during the fall. The whole thing was now wobbly and completely misaligned. Normally, I have a Leatherman and the appropriate bits hanging on my belt. But according to the law of maximum mess, the part was at home when I urgently needed it, but warm and dry.
Manchmal geht so ziemlich alles schief, was schiefgehen kann. Letzte Nacht machte ich mich auf den Weg zum nahegelegenen, ehemaligen Eisenbahngelände. Der Fussweg dauert ungefähr 30 Minuten. Ich bin also mit dem kleinen Gepäck los. Am Stativ hatte ich das Camera Rotation Tool und die Kamera befestigt. Das Stativ hing am Gurt, Kamera nach unten, über meiner Schulter. In den Jackentaschen hatte ich die Emisar D4V2, die Noctigon DM11, passende Farbfilter, jeweils einen Ersatzakku für die Taschenlampen und die Kamera, den Funkfernauslöser, eine Flasche Bier und einige Prismen verstaut. Auf dem halben Weg fiel mir dann auf, dass die Prismen gar nicht an das Laowa 12/2,8, welches ich an die Kamera gesteckt hatte, passen. Dieses hat kein Filtergewinde. Der Ausflug fing also schonmal gut an. Als ich auf dem Eisenbahngelände angekommen war löste sich die Mittelsäule aus dem Stativ. Die Kamera samt CRT fiel auf den Boden. An der Stelle war Gras, die Kamera überstand den Sturz unbeschadet. 5 Minuten vorher wäre sie auf den harten Beton der Straße gefallen. Glück im Unglück sozusagen. Allerdings hat das Camera Rotation Tool den Sturz nicht unbeschadet überstanden. Einge Schrauben hatte sich beim Sturz gelöst. Das ganze Teil war jetzt wacklig und völlig verstellt. Normalerweise hängt ein Leatherman samt passenden Bits an meinem Gürtel. Aber nach dem Gesetz der maximalen Sauerei lag das Teil ausgerechnet dann wenn ich es dringend gebraucht hätte zu Hause, dafür allerdings warm und trocken.

With this picture it was not quite so important that the Camera Rotation Tool was shaky. I had aligned it back to the optical axis as best I could. But rotating precisely around the centre point was impossible.
I stood in front of the tree with the Emisar D4V2 and green colour filter and started the exposure with the radio shutter release. I illuminated the tree and the ground in front of me. I switched off the torch and went to the camera. On the way there, I changed the colour filter on the Emisar. I turned the camera 180° around the optical axis. I then went back to the tree, illuminated it in the same way as the first time and then finished the exposure.
Bei diesem Bild war das nicht ganz so wichtig, dass das Camera Rotation Tool wacklig war. Ich hatte das so gut es ging wieder auf die optische Achse ausgerichtet. Aber präzise genau um den Mittelpunkt drehen war so unmöglich.
Ich stellte mich mit der Emisar D4V2 und grünem Farbfilter vor den Baum und startete mit dem Funkauslöser die Belichtung. Ich beleuchtete den Baum und den Boden vor mir. Ich schaltete die Taschenlampe aus und ging zur Kamera. Auf dem Weg dorthin wechselte ich das Farbfilter an der Emisar. Ich drehte die Kamera um 180° um die optische Achse. Ich ging dann wieder zum Baum, beleuchtete diesen auf gleiche Weise wie beim ersten Mal und beendete dann die Belichtung.

Here you can see the first attempt. Actually, it's not that bad, but I wanted to shoot a variation in which the scene is displayed straight on.
Hier seht ihr den ersten Versuch. Eigentlich gar nicht so schlecht, ich wollte aber noch eine Variante aufnehmen, bei der die Szene gerade dargestellt wird.

Previously I had taken some pictures without camera rotation. In the last picture I had a blue colour filter on the Emisar. Somehow the blue light is hardly visible. Next time I'll put a torch with a blue LED in again. That works much better.
Zuvor hatte ich einige Bilder ohne Camera Rotation aufgenommen. Im letzten Bild hatte ich ein blaues Farbfilter an der Emisar. Irgendwie ist das blaue Licht kaum zu sehen. Das nächste Mal stecke ich wieder eine Taschenlampe mit blauer LED ein. Das funktioniert wesentlich besser.

This is the last picture of the tree. I had first lit the trunk and the thick branches with the Emisar and red colour filter. Then I had removed the colour filter and lit the leaves and the rest of the scene.
Das ist das letzte Bild des Baumes. Ich hatte zuerst den Stamm und die dicken Ästen mit der Emisar und rotem Farbfilter beleuchtet. Dann hatte ich das Farbfilter entfernt und die Blätter und den Rest der Szene beleuchtet.

There is another free-standing tree about 100 metres away. Both are oaks. There were still many leaves on the first tree. On this one, there were only 7 or 11 leaves left. I'm not an ornithologist, or whatever it's called, but I find it quite strange that two oak trees can look so different at such a short distance from each other.
In ungefähr 100 Metern Entfernung steht ein weiterer freistehender Baum. Beides sind Eichen. Am ersten Baum waren noch viele Blätter. An diesem Exemplar hingen nur noch 7 oder 11 Blätter. Ich bin jetzt kein Ornithologe, oder wie das heißt, aber ich finde das recht seltsam, dass zwei Eichen in so geringem Abstand zueinander so unterschiedlich aussehen können.

Here I had illuminated the trunk with a green colour filter. Then the rest of the scene without the colour filter. Unfortunately, I am visible in the picture myself. The wild boars have dug a nice big hole there. I almost fell. Anyway, I stopped my movement at this point and thus illuminated myself in the picture. Light painting is no pony farm.
Hier hatte ich den Stamm mit grünem Farbfilter beleuchtet. Im Anschluss dann den Rest der Szene ohne Farbfilter. Leider bin ich selbst im Bild sichtbar. Die Wildschweine haben dort ein schönes, großes Loch gebuddelt. Fast wäre ich gestürzt. Jedenfalls stoppte ich an dieser Stelle meine Bewegung und leuchtete mich somit selbst ins BIld. Light Painting ist kein Ponyhof.

So. Now we come to the fun part of the evening. I wanted to rotate the tree by 180°, as shown in the picture. With an intact Camera Rotation Tool this would be quite easy. With the CRT in this shaky state, however, it was a real challenge. I aligned the centre of the image with the place that would later be the centre of the image, i.e. slightly below the trunk. Then I turned the camera 180° and looked where the centre of the picture would be. Not where it belongs, of course. I then set the correct position with the gearhead, which is mounted under the CRT, and tried to remember this position as best I could. I turned the camera back again and put the gearhead back in the original position. I started the exposure and lit the tree. Then I turned the camera and blindly adjusted the gearhead. I lit the tree a second time and finished the exposure. What can I say? It worked on the first try. The evening was saved. 😊 I put everything back in my bags, checked again that the centre column was now really fixed and set off on my way back.
So. Nun kommen wir zum lustigen Teil des Abends. Ich wollte den Baum um 180° rotieren, und zwar so wie im Bild zu sehen. Mit einem intakten Camera Rotation Tool wäre das recht einfach. Mit dem CRT in diesem wackligen Zustand war das allerdings ein echte Herausforderung. Ich richtete die Mitte des Bildes auf die Stelle aus, die später die Bildmitte sein sollte, also etwas unterhalb des Stammes. Dann drehte ich die Kamera um 180° und schaute wo dann die Bildmitte sein würde. Natürlich nicht wo sie hingehört. Ich stellte dann die richtige Position mit dem Getriebneiger, welcher unter dem CRT montiert ist, ein und versuchte mir diese Postition so gut es ging zu merken. Ich drehte die Kamera wieder zurück und stellte den Getriebeneiger wieder in die ursprüngliche Postition. Ich startete die Belichtung und beleuchtete den Baum. Dann drehte ich die Kamera und stellte blind den Getriebeneiger ein. Ich beleuchtete den Baum ein zweites Mal und beendete die Belichtung. Was soll ich sagen? Das hat beim ersten Versuch funktioniert. Der Abend war gerettet. 😊 Ich packte alles wieder in meine Taschen, kontrollierte nochmal, ob die Mittelsäule jetzt tatsächlich fest ist und machte mich auf den Rückweg.

Dafür das der Abend so mies begonnen hat, sind da aber schöne Bilder bei entstanden. Das letzte Bild ist mein Favorit.
Ich wäre nach so einem Start in die Nacht, wahrscheinlich einfach wieder nach Hause gegangen und hätte in mein Kopfkissen geweint.
Ja, sind dann doch einige gute Ergebnisse entstanden. Wieder nach Hause zu gehen war auch mein erster Impuls, aber da ich schon fast an den Bäumen war, habe ich einfach das Beste daraus gemacht.
Ok verständlich so kurz vor dem Ziel. Da haste aber wirklich das Beste draus gemacht.

It never rains unless it pours, also, if one thing goes wrong, plan on at least two other things going wrong. Personally, I think you needed two bottles of beer, not one, but that wouldn't have helped you avoid that wild boar hole.

My fav has to be the last one, that icy colour of the tree up against the dark curving ribbon of other trees. Also, really liked the first one, the fourth one (so pink), and the sixth one.
I'd have wanted to cry at a camera dropping like that, so lucky it was grass it landed on. Btw, I took a look at your lens, Laowa 12/2.8, what a drool worthy lens.
The camera falls down a few times. So nothing special anymore. 😂
I fixed the CRT and will go there later again. The idea of taking two beers this time is excellent. 🍻
Solid nerves there with the camera. If I drop something it's going to get broken, so good at that, especially anything glass.
Definitely take two beers this time, maybe see if you can catch some wild boar or get it to pose with threats of eating it.
