Local Carnival in Frame

The other day I had to explain to @litguru what I meant by neighborhood unit. Basically we inherited this system from the Japanese that is extremely hierarchical. We have this smallest unit in the government body called RT ( neighborhood unit) and RW ( neighborhood community that is above RT). We go from this smallest structure to eventually the top echelons and eventually to the president. So, this carnival event was organized by the village officials. This is the first time in many years that our village has a festive celebration for the independence day.

I certainly did not expect that people would pour money and their resources into this event but they did. Considering that most of the neighborhoods are business areas and local markets, gathering money didn’t seem like a difficult task. There are also people with all sorts of professions that contributed to the event. This event has this notorious warning that anyone who isn't getting involved will be fined ranging from $5 to a whopping $15/ house. So it forced people to go out of their day from toddlers to seniors in order to participate in the event.

These are the pictures that I have gathered from the events. My parents didn’t participate because first, my dad is on a wheelchair and my mom was the caregiver. So, I made myself participate by being the photographer of it. When I was there, I felt so small with just my prosumer camera when people bring all sorts of expensive equipment 😂 but hey, what matters is, I guess I contributed something.

I walked in the blazing sun and I can’t imagine these people who’re in the carnival, wearing heavy costumes and sometimes heavy tiaras/wings to stand the heat. Props to all of them. Let’s start this collection of mine with people that has staff that they carry.

DSC04374.JPG

that must be a heavy wing

Smallest staff I've seen

I hope she's okay because it looks like she's pregnant and it was blazing hot

Her staff basically blend in with the costume

They have this staff that are also decorated with ornaments which match their costumes. Since the majority of the people are muslim, that’s why they wear head coverings. But I also live in a relatively mixed community with more Chinese descents and all sorts of faith. We’ll get to that later.

All Age and diverse

We got some crossdresser in the crowd with men dressing up as women. It’s pretty common over here during carnival that people do crossdressing.

My mom said it's pretty outrageous and if she were the moms, she would pay to have them properly dresed but I find it so funny

Little kids are often supervised because in case they get tired, they will be transported to another vehicle

Culture and Local Culture

DSC04368.JPG

I am putting this speaker as our local culture because it does. We have this urban culture where people put so many speakers that are able to shake the window in your house. They are like a moving vibrator hahaha. It’s insane that people do that because standing in front of it could really break your eardrum. That one above is the smallest of them all and there were more outrageous speakers that I didn’t get to capture.

There are some people dressing up to represent different cultures in Indonesia. This one is one of the best one out there.

Carriages and decorated vehicle

We have some awesome carriage, horser, carts and a lot of intriguing carnival things. This is the first time after years that I am seeing this level of creativity from people around me.

That’s all my collection from the carnival. Thankfully it wasn’t raining and the lighting was just great enough so that I don’t need to do any heavy lifting to the images
