Beautiful light! The east coast of North America has colder winter than areas at similar latitudes on the European side because of the fact that in Europe the prevailing winds blow from the ocean. That is why your winters tend to be just as snowy but brighter.

Well, Europe got the Gulf Stream that keeps the ocean off Western Europe a bit warmer.

Yes. And the west coast of North America above the 50th latitude is also warmed by a warm sea current. Same thing on the South American west coast in the far south. The effect is stronger in Europe than anywhere else because of the particular orientation of the coastline, though.
