Tradition photo . Dancing Devils of Chuao.
Hello Photography Lovers! I have written this new post for this community and it makes me very excited, I love the photography of traditions, I really enjoy the whole process, I have a special love for the local culture of any place; this time I have made a selection of photographs about a tradition that has its origins in the seventeenth century, is a tradition linked to Catholicism but with strong original features and African descent, in Venezuela have several versions, which have greater strength would be: the one of a priest who seeing himself alone and without money to worship his belief in the Santísimo invokes the devils, and the one of a great drought, where the villagers make a petition to the Santísimo asking him that if it rains they dress as devils.
Hola Amantes de la Fotografía! He escrito este nuevo post para esta comunidad y me hace mucha ilusión, me encanta la fotografía de tradiciones, realmente disfruto todo el proceso, tengo un especial amor por la cultura local, de cualquier lugar; en esta oportunidad he hecho una selección de fotografías sobre una tradición que tiene sus orígenes en el siglo XVII, es una tradición ligada al catolicismo pero con fuertes rasgos originales y afrodescendientes, en Venezuela tienen varias versiones, las que poseen mayor fuerza serian: la de un sacerdote que viéndose solo y sin dinero para darle culto a su creencia del Santísimo invoca a los diablos, y la de una gran sequía, donde los pobladores hacen una petición al Santísimo pidiéndole que si llovía ellos se vestían de diablos.
There are actually 11 brotherhoods that make up this tradition and they are divided in different parts of Venezuela. It responds to a religious cultural manifestation, it takes place on Corpus Christi, (counting nine Thursdays after Holy Thursday). One of the sister brotherhoods of the Diablos Danzantes de Chuao is the Diablos Danzantes de Yare and as a curious fact, this brotherhood is the oldest in Latin America and is known as the one with the most followers in the world.
En realidad son 11 cofradías las que componen esta tradición y se dividen en diferentes partes de Venezuela. Responde a una manifestación cultural religiosa, se da en el Corpus Christi, (contando nueve jueves luego del jueves Santo). Una de las hermandades (cofradías) hermanas de los Diablos Danzantes de Chuao son los Diablos Danzantes de Yare y como dato curioso les comento que esta hermandad es la más antigua de América Latina y se conoce como la que posee más adeptos en el mundo.
Each brotherhood generates a kind of street theater accompanied by the rhythm of drums and maracas, they have their particularities, in the case of the Diablos Danzantes de Chuao I can tell you that: they divide their representatives by hierarchy, First Captain, Second Captain, Third Captain, La Sayona (long straw hair), Captain of Alms and Cashier. Their dances or choreographies are varied, called El Carabalí, La Dancita, La Rueda, they can take off their masks if they are inside an enclosure, in the street they must put them on.
Cada cofradía genera como una especie de teatro de calle acompañadas al ritmo de tambores y maracas, tienen sus particularidades, en el caso de los Diablos Danzantes de Chuao les puedo comentar que: dividen a sus representantes por jerarquía, Primer Capitán, Segundo Capitán, Tercer Capitán, La Sayona (pelo largo de paja), Capitán de Limosna y Cajero. Sus danzas o coreografías son variadas, llamadas El Carabalí, La Dancita, La Rueda, pueden quitarse las mascaras si están dentro de un recinto, en la calle deben ponérselas.
As you can see in the pictures there is a lot of color in their costumes, the masks are simpler than the other brotherhoods, they always carry a maraca, the costumes are loud because they put bells, it is a whole party of rhythms and very particular colors, it is exciting to see, feel the devotion of an entire people for those days of celebration.
Como observan en las fotografías hay mucho colorido en sus trajes, las mascaras son más sencillas que las otras hermandades, siempre llevan consigo una maraca, los trajes son sonoros porque les colocan cascabeles, es toda una fiesta de ritmos y colores muy particulares, es apasionante ver, sentir la devoción de todo un pueblo por esos días de celebración.
