Larnaca is the oldest city in Cyprus, also known as Kition. The city was founded 6000 years ago and has always been a crossroads of civilizations.
Many nations have passed through or settled in this city. Some came as colonizers or conquerors, while others were merchants, explorers or tourists.
Greeks and Persians, Romans and Byzantines, Franks and Venetians, Turks and British, they all left their indelible mark here.
The British, who entered the island via Larnaca, ruled from 1878 to 1960.
The city became the diplomatic and trade center of the island. In the first years of British rule, Larnaca became a center of modernization and the place where the first newspapers of Cyprus were published.
Larnaca has a long, colorful and rich history. Hundreds of years of opposing civilizations, architecture and culture have left their mark deep in the soul of this city.
The Byzantine period was one of the most culturally rich epochs of the city. The basilica of Saint Lazarus was built in the 9th century. This stone-built church is the Saint`s resting place.
