Mdina - Streets of a silent city

Mdina became famous worldwide thanks to the Game of Thrones series. One of the most beautiful cities in Malta, which was also the capital of the country from ancient times to the Middle Ages. Mdina is known as the Silent City, due to the migration of its inhabitants to the new capital, Birgu. Although the Maltese nobility remained in Mdina, almost all other residents left, and the city became a ghost town.

Today, only 300 people live in Mdina, but the city is practically merged with Rabat, which has over 11,000 inhabitants.

Mdina covers an area of less than 1 km2, and the tour does not last more than a few hours. The city has several attractions, mainly palaces, churches and museums. The entire city is surrounded by impressive walls, and in the former moat under the city today there are beautiful gardens that you can walk through. All this together makes Mdina one of the most beautiful medieval fortified cities in Europe.

Mdina Gate is the main city gate to enter the medieval core — and this gate is also featured as one of the main city gates to the King's Landing in Game of Thrones.

St. Paul's Cathedral was built in the 12th century on the site where, according to legend, the Roman governor Publius met the apostle Paul after he was shipwrecked in Malta.
