My younger son and I decided to go to the Christmas market in Vienna. Vienna is practically "just around the corner" - in the morning we get on a fast train and two hours later we get off at the main station of the Austrian capital.
Immediately upon arrival, we were refreshed at a Burger King near Stephansplatz. I was surprised that it was completely empty. Even though it was before noon and the location is in the most central part of the city. Inside I was impressed by the stucco ceiling and the vaulted columns - Vienna is Vienna.
S mladším synkem jsme se rozhodli podívat na vánoční trhy do Vídně. Vídeň máme prakticky "za humny" - ráno sedneme do rychlíku a za dvě hodiny vystupujeme na hlavním nádraží rakouské metropole.
Hned po příjezdu jsme se byli posilnit v Burger Kingu nedaleko Štěpánského náměstí. Překvapilo mě, že tam bylo úplně prázdno. I když bylo před polednem a provozovna je v tom nejcentrovatějším centru - asi jako v Praze na Václaváku. Uvnitř mě zaujal štukovaný strop a klenby se sloupořadím - holt Vídeň je Vídeň.

But let's move on. Through the Graben and Kohlmarkt exhibition streets and past the Hofburg Palace we reached Maria Theresia Square. It was early afternoon, the streets were not yet lit, but the market on M.-T. Square was already beginning to charge us with its pre-Christmas atmosphere.

Once we had had our fill of Maria Theresa, we took the subway to Schönbrunn - the former imperial residence, which for us Czechs is linked to the reign of the "old potentate" Franz Joseph I. The Christmas market had the usual atmosphere. As a curiosity I noticed a bicycle-powered carousel where parents could pedal and children could ride on a carriage, tricycle, chest, gramophone trumpet or a kind of watering can. Absurd.
I've been to the Imperial Park in Schönbrunn many times, but always only in the summer when it's bathed in sunshine, full of greenery and colourful flowerbeds. In winter, I actually saw it for the first time and it reminded me of the polar regions. One can sometimes see even notoriously familiar things in a different light, and that makes it all the more surprising.
By the way, did you know that the legal drinking age in Austria is 16?
Jakmile jsme se nabažili Marie Terezie, jeli jsme metrem do Schönbrunnu - bývalé císařské rezidence, která je pro nás Čechy spjatá s panováním "stařičkého mocnáře" Franze Josefa I. Vánoční trh měl i zde obvyklou atmosféru. Jako kuriozitu jsem zaznamenal bicyklem poháněný kolotoč, kde rodiče mohli šlapat a děti se mohly svézt na kočáru, tříkolce, truhlici, troubě z gramofonu nebo na jakési konvi. Absurdní.
V císařském parku v Schönbrunnu jsem byl mnohokrát, ale pokaždé jen v létě, kdy je zalitý sluncem, plný zeleně a pestrých květinových záhonů. V zimě jsem ho vlastně viděl poprvé a připomínal mi polární kraje. Člověk může i notoricky známé věci někdy poznat v jiném světle a o to víc je to překvapující.
Mimochodem, věděli jste, že zákonný věk na pití alkoholu je v Rakousku 16 let?
From Schönbrunn we took the subway to Westbahnhof and walked across the famous Mariahilferstrasse to the Parliament and the Vienna City Hall. The market at the City Hall tends to be the biggest. The size, the decoration, the number of stalls and even the fact that the carousel is two-storey high.

On the way back, we saw a convoy of police cars at the Parliament. What was going on? We saw the demonstration of medical workers from Vienna's hospitals. Several hundred people, some in white coats, with whistles and banners, marched down the street. I was surprised by the cultured impression this demonstration made on me.

Na zpáteční cestě jsme u Parlamentu viděli závěj policejních aut. Co se dělo? Přimíchali jsme se do demonstrace zdravotníků z vídeňských nemocnic. Několik stovek lidí, někteří v bílých pláštích, s píšťalkami a transparenty procházely ulicí. Překvapilo mě, jakým kultivovaným dojmem na mě tato demonstrace působila. Holt zdravotníci nejsou žádní dezoláti...
Our Vienna sightseeing tour ends where it began - in St. Stephen's Square and the nearby streets, this time in the evening light. We walk around, soaking up the pre-Christmas atmosphere. The band ABBA plays from a nearby stage - the end of the above mentioned doctoral demonstration. Then the metro takes us to the station and back home by fast train.
We had the impression that the Christmas markets were a bit poorer this time than other years. But maybe it's because it's only the beginning of December, and it's still going strong.

Den plný zážitků nám pomohl završit jeden cestující v rychlíku. Vytáhl knihu, která svou velikostí, tloušťkou a stářím připomínala čarodějnický grimoár, a se zaujetím začal studovat schéma lidského oka. Nechci se nikoho nešetrně dotknout, ale připadalo mi to skoro až strašidelné :)

Jó Mexikoplatz, vyhlášený bleší trh oblíbený mezi turisty z východní Evropy. Nikdy jsem tam nebyl :)
