A visit to the Montjuic Cemetery in Barcelona - Spain (ENG - ESP )

Many times when I go to the city of Barcelona it is difficult for me to locate some places to know or visit, since I have had the fortune to visit this city very often and well I think that all the tourist part if I could call it I already know it.

Searching a little on the internet, I found that the Montjuic Cemetery is considered a historical and very famous in the city and in fact they have guided tours that are scheduled on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, so on this visit I could be one of those Sundays in which they make tours, so I have ventured and took the opportunity to take some good pictures and to share for the first time an entry in this community.

Muchas de las veces cuando voy a la ciudad de Barcelona se me dificulta un poco ubicar algunos sitios que conocer o visitar, ya que he tenido la fortuna de visitar esta ciudad muy a menudo y bueno creo que toda la parte turística si bien la podría llamarla ya la conozco.

Buscando un poco por internet, me he encontrado con que el Cementerio de Montjuic está considerado como un bien histórico y muy famoso en la ciudad y de hecho realizan visitas guiadas que las tienen pautada el segundo y el cuarto domingo de cada mes, así que en esta visita pude estar uno de esos domingos en el cual hacen recorridos, así que me he aventurado y aprovechaba para poder tomar unas buenas fotografías y poder compartir por primera vez una entrada en esta comunidad.

After a walk of about 15-20 minutes to locate the exact place where we were going to meet, I get the chapel where we receive employees of the cemetery and shows us a video presentation on the history of the cemetery, here we are told that this cemetery was opened in the nineteenth century and was built to meet the high demand of population that was being seen in the city of Barcelona at this time. In addition, they had the fortune that by this time in Barcelona there were some artistic or architectural movements that shaped this cemetery and in which we can find countless works of art of many styles.

Luego de una caminata de unos 15-20 minutos para poder ubicar el sitio exacto donde nos íbamos a reunir, consigo la capilla en donde nos reciben empleados del cementerio y nos muestra un video de una presentación sobre la historia del cementerio, aquí nos comentan que este cementerio fue inaugurado en el Siglo XIX y estuvo construido para satisfacer la gran demanda de población que se estaba viendo en la ciudad de Barcelona para esta época. Además, que contaron con la fortuna de que para esta época en Barcelona existían unos movimientos artísticos o se podría decir arquitectónicos que dieron forma a este cementerio y en el que podemos encontrar innumerables obras de artes de muchos estilos.

The guided tour of this visit is very close to the entrance of the cemetery, in an area called Paseo de Gracia, this is one of the most important and expensive avenues of the city of Barcelona, we detail that for this time when the cemetery was built in the city of Barcelona there were no elevators in the buildings and people who had a high purchasing power because they chose to live on the first floors of the buildings and those who had less money capacity because they were already occupying what were the next floors to the attics, This was because it was very complicated to climb so many stairs and in addition to the fact that at that time the higher the floors were, the colder or warmer it was, depending on the winter or summer.

El Tour guiado de esta visita es muy cercana a la entrada del cementerio, en una zona llamada Paseo de Gracia, este es una de las avenidas más importantes y costosas de la ciudad de Barcelona, nos detallan que para esta época en que fue construido el cementerio en la ciudad de Barcelona no habían ascensores en los edificios y las personas que tenían un alto poder adquisitivo pues optaron por vivir en las plantas bajas de los edificios y las que tenían menos capacidad de dinero pues ya iban ocupando lo que eran los pisos siguientes hasta los áticos, esto se daba porque era muy complicado subir tantas escaleras y adicionalmente de que en los pisos en esa época entre más alto estuviese era un poco más frío o más caliente dependiendo el invierno o el verano.

Well, to our surprise this same social impact was also reflected in the Montjuic Cemetery, then at the entrance or in the lower part of the cemetery we will find the most representative and spectacular tombs that we can see in our tour. At first glance we would find the pantheons of wealthy families, here were the same families who were responsible for hiring an architect who could go making the mansions in these family pantheons and ensure that at the time of his death also had the same power if you could say or social status.

Pues para nuestra sorpresa este mismo impacto social también se vio reflejando en el Cementerio de Montjuic, entonces en la entrada o en la parte baja del cementerio encontraremos las tumbas más representativas y espectaculares que podemos visualizar en nuestro recorrido. De primera vista nos encontraríamos con los panteones de las familias adineradas, acá eran las mismas familias quienes se encargaban de contratar a un arquitecto para que pudiese ir realizando las mansiones en estos panteones familiares y asegurarse que al momento de su muerte pues también tuviesen el mismo poder sí se podría decir o estatus social.

Seeing the perspectives of the other side of the coin, there were also much cheaper options for the theme of the graves, among them were the common graves that are located in the back of the cemetery, but nevertheless, there is also a separation of social status within the cemetery, as it is clearly distributed for people of different purchasing power or different religious beliefs, in this cemetery we can see a distribution of foreigners atheists, Protestants, Catholics, Gypsies or not, distributed in different areas and not mixed with the great bourgeoisie of the dead.

Viendo las perspectivas del otro lado de la moneda, también existían opciones mucho más económicas para el tema de las tumbas, entre ellas tenían las fosas comunes que se encuentran ubicadas en la parte trasera del cementerio, pero no obstante, también existe una separación de estatus sociales dentro del cementerio, ya que él mismo está claramente distribuido para personas de diferentes poder adquisitivo o de diferentes creencias religiosas, en este cementerio podemos ver una distribución de extranjeros ateos, protestantes, católicos, gitanos o no, distribuidos en diferentes zonas y no mezclados con la gran burguesía de muertos.

One of the figures that stands out in this cemetery are many statues in the form of angels, which if you look at them have a fixed gaze towards the visitors and these in turn have a function that they are taking care of all those people who are resting in peace. These angels can be found in many different positions, some are funny, others are a little scary, others inspire peace and some others will inspire fear.

Una de las figuras que más destaca en este cementerio son muchas estatuas en forma de Ángeles, que si los observa tienen una mirada fija hacia los visitantes y estos a su vez tienen una función de que están cuidando a todas esas personas que están descansando en paz. Estos Ángeles lo podemos encontrar en mucha cantidad de posturas, algunos divertidos, otros dan un poco de miedo, otro inspira paz y alguno que otro te inspirará miedo.
