Deities in Exhibition - Sango

Hello amazing folks! How are you doing this fine morning? Actually, it's sometime past midnight as I write these words.

It's been a minute. Anybody miss me yet? Maybe too early to ask that.😃💀

Starting today, I'll be releasing images from a photoseries titled "Deities in Exhibition" which explores and discusses the various gods and goddess in African mythology - Yoruba mythology, to be precise.

And to get started, the spotlight is on one of my favourite African deities - Ṣàngó Olukoso.

Ṣàngó, in Yoruba mythology, is the god of thunder and lightning. Also known as Jakuta, he is famous for his powerful double-headed axe and fiery temper.

Ṣàngó is considered one of most powerful deities in Yorubaland & is worshipped in many parts of the world.
Sango was husband to at least 3 wives - Ọbà, Ọ́sun and Ọ́yá.

He was the third Alafin of Oyo, following Oranmiyan and Ajaka, and is said to be one of the greatest to ever sit on the throne. His seven-year reign, marked by numerous battles and victories campaigns, was brought to an end after his palace was destroyed by a strike of lightning he summoned.

The god of thunder is worshiped on the fifth day of the week, Ojo Jakuta, with the Bata drum and ritual foods such as guguru, bitter kola, àmàlà, and gbegiri.

And oh, the picture was taken sometime in 2021 by yours truly, in Ilẹ-Ifẹ, Ọṣun.

Up next, the deity in focus would be ...... Naaah,🤐🤐 you'd just have to wait till then. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽

Till then, be safe. ❤️🖤
