The local council seems to have decided that wildflowers are an essential part of the grass verges in our town. So much so they have elected to leave sections of the grass entirely to seeded wildflowers.
Honestly, they have done this well; the council has chosen areas that don't affect driver visibility and thus the safety of our children. Fortunately, the locations they have selected tend to be the areas further away from roads in the small green spaces generally absent of flowers.
This first picture was something I initially thought was a Poppy. However, in hindsight, it appears to be a Scarlett Flax (Linum grandiflorum):

I liked the framing of this shot; it was pretty hard to find flowers that were not surrounded by more flowers making it hard to separate the subject from the background:

These common poppies (Papaver rhoeas) are true beauties, usually. Unfortunately, Poppies only grow in disturbed ground. From my experience, getting them to grow in successive seasons can be difficult as other plants outcompete them.

The following photograph appears to be an Opium Poppy (Papaver Somniferum). However, this is almost certainly a cultivar that has been selectively bred not to produce any significant amount of Opium.

Finally here is one of the many shots I got of the poppies in amongst the other plants; so far, I have identified Borage and Cornflower - as I explore the planting areas, I will try and figure else what else has grown.

I'm delighted that the powers that be have decided that Wildflowers should be a big part of our green spaces this year, and I'm looking forward to discovering what else they have quietly done in the background.
This probably saves them money as they only need to mow around the edges of the verge, leaving the central mass of wildflowers alone. So this seems like a win-win situation to me.
