[EN/DE] Fun with a LaserCube

I recently got my hands on a LaserCube. This is a RGB laser projector in a very compact design and battery powered so it can be used outside. It also comes with an app so it can be controlled with a mobile phone and has even got a feature to display custom designs.

Vor kurzen habe ich ein LaserCube bekommen. Dies ist ein RGL Laser Projektor in einem sehr kompakten Design und sogar mit eingebauter Batterie so das man ihn draußen benutzen kann. Dazu gibt es auch eine App mit der man von seinem Handy aus den Cube steuern kann und sogar eigene Designs Projizieren lassen kann.

Right that night I took it out to test it and get a feeling for its potential. Just shooting some patterns through tall grass already shows some cool 3d effects (probably lost a bit in a 2d photo).

Direkt am selben Abend bin ich mit dem Cube los gezogen um ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen und das Potential auszuloten. Allein ein paar Muster durch hohes Gras zu schießen zeigt schon coole 3d Effekte (die ein wenig auf einem 2d Foto verloren gehen).

Since I was visiting a local art installation that night with a fellow artist I had a perfect target for more experiments. This tube is made of polished metal squares so it is essentially a large segmented mirror tube. The idea was to shoot the lasers in a low angle in the walls of the tube to let the laser reflect a few times inside it. Some smoke blown through the tube was supposed to make the laser beams visible. But it turned out the metal was a bit too dull and had too many scratches on it so the laser beams got diffused too much to be visible in the smoke. But for a first test it was quite an interesting experience.

Da ich an dem Abend mit einem Künstler Kollegen unterwegs war und wir eine lokale Kunst Installation besuchten hatte ich ein perfektes Ziel für weitere Experimente. Dieses Rohr ist von außen und innen mit polierten Metallsegmenten ausgekleidet so das es im Grunde ein riesiger Spiegel in Rohrform ist. Die Idee war den Laser in einen flachen Winkel in die Röhre zu schießen damit dieser sich im inneren mehrfach hin und her reflektiert und das ganze dann mit Rauch sichtbar zu machen. Aber leider war das Metall wohl nicht stark genug poliert oder zu verkratzt so das sich der Laserstrahl zu sehr zerstreut hat um im Rauch sichtbar zu sein. Aber als erster Test war es eine sehr spannende Erfahrung.

So the reflections did not work, but we could see the laser rays in the smoke on the side where I placed the LaserCube. So for a next test I just placed the cube behind the tube and shot some patterns with a rainbow gradient straight through the tube and applied some smoke again.
This time the effect was just amazing on the photo and I was happy with the results. I think I will have a lot of fun with this device in the future and probably have only scratched the surface of its full potential with these experiments.

Da die Reflektionen nicht funktioniert haben wir aber den Laserstrahl im Rauch klar sehen konnten bevor er in die Rohre traf habe ich als nächstes den LaserCube direkt hinter die Röhre gestellt um den Strahl direkt durch die Röhre zu schießen. Diesmal mit einem geometrischen Design und einem Regenbogen Gradient und wieder Rauch durch die Röhre geblasen.
Und diesmal war der Effekt wirklich fantastisch und ich bin zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Ich denke ich werde noch viel Spaß mit dem LaserCube haben und glaube das ich nur die Spitze vom Potential dieses Gerätes angekratzt habe.
