Driftless Images : A Slough of Boat Houses

More March snow fell on the area this week. I stopped by a local Mississippi River backchannel called the Black River. There is a strong community of boathouses on this stretch of water. Boathouses are common in the area of North America, especially along the Mississippi River. If you drive up and down the Mississippi Valley, you will see stretches of these boat homes at various places.

As time moves on, these will all be removed as families pass away. There has been a concerted effort to remove boathouses from the shoreline in order to restore the waterways in the area. So, like many things else in life, these images too will fade away to time.

When you mentioned boat houses my mind went to ones that move up and down waterways, never thought of houses being built in numbers along the banks of rivers like this.

Perhaps with time they will disappear, maybe not a bad idea giving life back to the moving water the way it was previously.

Nice photography, something to keep for those who in time to come will not know about this style of living @sagesigma

Thank you @joanstewart - I've been back in the area for about 15 years, and the number of homes on the river have been reduced significantly over that time. As you can imagine, there have been many complaints; but as you said, it's not a bad idea at all to give life back to the Mississippi.

Snow probably seems mundane and boring to you...But snow pictures always appeal to me. Great snaps of the boathouses too.

I appreciate it - wish I could send some your way! If I'm still taking pictures of snow here come late April, I'm moving to Mexico

Haha, yeah good plan. Good food in Mexico! 🇲🇽

Extraordinary beauty, silent nature

thank you! Rivers do make it easy, don't they? Actually, any water makes it easy to enjoy silence

That is somewhat sad, but also understandable at the same time. Living on the shore of a river is probably providing calm and relaxing lifestyle to the families living there. There are also similar houses on the shore of the Tisza river in Hungary. Okay, those houses are not directly on the shore, but just/only a little bit away. But the shore is still visible from those houses.

I know a few family friends who have homes here for years; typically they pass from generation to generation. It's only until a descendent a) no longer exists or b) chooses to not inherit the boathouse that the city removes it. Years ago, that stretch of river I shot probably had x2 to x3 times the amount of homes on the river.

Our good family friends who reside in Onalaska took us on their pontoon on the river. I was really surprised how many boat houses there were, never had really given it much thought. Kinda cool though, nice pics.

As for Mexico, I just got back. Maybe heading there ourselves. Did you have a place in mind already, or just shooting the shit?

Nice! Good old Onalaska...I feel like you have a good idea of this place already.

Just shooting the shit on Mexico...you know how it is this time of year; winter goes a bit too long and warmer places are the dream...
