My First Analog Camera - Zenit 12xp

Hi, so I finally got my hands on an Analog Camera, specifically a Zenit 12xp, this was a birthday gift. I was trying to get an Analog Camera for months but coulnd't afford one.
I had a Bencini Comet NK 135 that my father gave me, but i had to leave it in my country when i moved in to Madrid, back there couldn't buy a film so never tried it out to see if was working and didn't took it with me, am hoping to get it back someday.
Now i got this one and am currently taking photos with a 35mm Black and White Film, it's in basically pristine condition and am having a lot of fun shooting analog for the first time in my life, let me tell you about the camera.
The Camera
The Zenit 12xp it's SLR a russian camera manufactured between the 80's and 90's. The construction of the camera it's pretty sturdy and weights almost 1Kg with the lens. The body it's made with plastic and metal the upper part of the body it's metal, same as the lens connection, and the rest it's plastic.
It comes with a Helios Lens in a M42 Mount, in this case a 44M-4 58mm, i have to say it's pretty bright it's goes up to F/2 with a minimal distance of 50cm. As same as the body it's mady with metal and plastic. You can unscrew the lens turning it to the left (from the front) or right (from the back).
This camera specifically it's from 1989 and the lens from the same years according to the serial numbers, the first 2 digits of the serial numbers indicates the year of fabrication, so we can say this cameras has 32 years and in a very very good condition.
Tha camera has a few options in exposition, it' allows ISO 16 to 500.
In shutter speed allows: 1/30 - 1/125 - 1/250 - 1/500 and Bulb mode.
The shutter button goes to half way for the leds to light up and indicate how well exposed it's the picture, keep in mind you have to figure out the exposure triangle with a static ISO the leds gives you 3 hints: 1 upper led it's overexposed, 1 lower led it's underexposed and if the 2 leds are blinking it's suposed to be correctly exposed. This is the view inside the viewfinder.
Also, if you press the shutter button halfway and turn it to the right you lock it to make to the "V" option that's a self timer, you choose the options of exposure and set the timer to maybe make a family foto, self-portrait , or any purpose you may have.
Here you can see the shutter button and the "V" and "T" Options. The "T" option it's for long exposures, you set the shutter speed to "B" or bulb, press the shutter all the way and at the same time turn it to the left "T" option, and it will provide a open shutter til reset to the original position.
And here we have the camera timer.
This cameras works with 2 1.5V LR43 Button Batteries, if you are looking into buying this camera i recommend buying this specific batteries that are easy to find and work perfectly, i used 2 batteries and and little bit of tinfoil to secure the battery cap of the batteries.
On the left of the viewfinder you cand find the battery cap, you can unscrew it with a coin.
About the film am using a Ilford FP4 Plus Black and White 35mm. Cannot talk about it that much, because am just using the camera and the film for first time ever, so i can't talk about the detail and quality.
But if you are living in spain, you can find it in FNAC for less than €7.
Final Thoughts
For the time being i cannot say anything more about the camera, i don't have any results yet.
But, i can tell you it's a pretty good camera for getting into SLR cameras, or analog cameras if you are already into photography.
The construction of the camera combined with the price makes this camera very attractive, we are talking about you can find a Zenit 12xp even in the 20-80€ range, depending on the lens, and the state of the cameraa. And you can play a lot with it, as i said it has a M42 lens mount, so if you in ebay and search M42 lenses you may find a large variety of cheap functional lenses for this camera.
Am learning everyday and it's just a different experience, you have to adjust the exposure all mechanically, adjusting the shutter speed in the dial, adjusting the aperture in the lens, manual focus, and always having in mind the ISO you are using.
In my case i have to think in Black and White and in ISO 125, for now the leds of the camera are guiding me for a correct exposure, and am trying to "expose correctly", but am looking forward to do purposely over and underexposing images depending on the scene.
With all this said, am very happy, and very excited to keep learning, nowadays i have a lot of projects to finish from the photography academy that am studying in, so any other day i go out with my Zenit, and i don't have to worry about editing, i just walk around looking for somethin interesting to capture, and we will see the results in a month or so.

Hola, finalmente pude tener entre mis manos una Cámara Analógica, específcamente una Zenit 12xp, fue un regalo de cumpleaños. Estuve tratando de conseguir una cámara analógica por meses pero no podía comprar una.
Tuve en su momento una Bencini Comet NK 135 que me dio mi padre, pero tuve que dejarla en mi país cuando me mudé a madrid, allá no conseguí un rollo de filme así que no pude probarla para comprobar si funcionaba, y tampoco me la traje, espero poder tenerla de nuevo algún día.
Ahora tengo ésta y actualmente estoy tomando fotos en un filme de 35mm Blanco Y Negro, la cámara está prácticamente en una condición magnífica, me estoy divirtiendo un montón tomando fotos analógicas por primera vez en mi vida, déjenme hablarles de la cámara.
La Cámara
La Zenit 12xp es una cámara SLR rusa, manufacturada entre los 80s y los 90s. La construcción de la cámara es bástante robusta y pesa casi 1kg con el objetivo. El cuerpo está hecho de plástico y metal, la parte superior de la cámara es de metal, al igual que conexión o boca del lente, y el resto es plástico.
Vino con un lente Helios en la montura M42, en éste caso un 44M-4 58mm, tengo que decir que es un lente bastante luminoso con un máximo de apertura de F/2 con una mínima distancia de enfoque de 50cm. Al igual que el cuerpo está hecha de metal y plástico. Puedes desmontar el lente desenroscando a la izquierda si lo miras de frente o a la derecha si lo desenroscas desde atrás.
Ésta cámara específicamente es del 1989 y el lente del mismo año, según los números de serie, los 2 primero dígitos del número de serie indican el año de fabricación, así que podemos decir que tiene 32 años en muy buena condición.
La cámara tiene pocas opciones de exposición, admite ISO de 16 a 500.
En velocidad de obturación permite: 1/30 - 1/125 - 1/250 - 1/500 y B o Bulb Mode.
El botón de disparo puede presionarse a medio camino, y de ésta manera se encienden las leds indicativas de exposición para decir que tan bien expuesta está la imagen que estás viendo. Ten en cuenta que tienes que más o menos descifrar la configuración con una ISO estático, las leds te indican 3 situaciones: Led Superior significa que está sobreexpuesto, Led Inferior te indica que está subexpuesto y si los 2 leds están parpadeando se supone que tienes una exposición correcta, ésta es la vista en el visor.
Además, si presionas el disparador a la mitad y lo giras a la derecha lo bloqueas en la opción "V" ese es el temporizador de la cámara, seleccionas las opciones de exposición deseadas y pones el temporizador para tomar una foto familiar, auto-retrato, o para cualquier propósito que se te ocurra.
Aquí puedes ver el botón de dispare y las opciones "V" y "T", la opción llamada "T" es para largas exposiciones, marcas la velocidad a "B" o bulb, presionas el disparador por completo y al mismo tiempo lo giras a la posición de "T" a la izquierda, y así podrás tener una cortinilla abierta hasta que lo regreses a su posición original.
Y aquí está el temporizador de la cámara.
Ésta cámara funciona con 2 Baterías de 1.5V modelo LR43 tipo botón, si estás deseando comprar ésta cámara te recomiendo comprar las que vas a ver a continuación, son fáciles de encontrar y funcionar perfectamente, yo utilicé 2 baterías y un poco de papel aluminio para asegurarme que funcionen bien en el compartimiento de las baterías.
A la izquierda del visor pueden encontrar la tapa de las baterías que puede ser desatornillada con una moneda por ejemplo.
Sobre el rollo fotográfrico ahora mismo estoy utilizando un rollo de 35mm Ilford FP4 Plus en Blanco y Ngero. No puedo comentar mucho sobre el mismo, estoy usando la cámara y el rollo por primera vez, asi que no puede hablar ni del detalle ni de la calidad.
Si alguien vive en españa, pude ser encontrada en FNAC por menos de €7.
Conclusión
Por los momentos no puedo decir nada más sobre la cámara, no tengo resultados todavía.
Pero puedo decir que es una muy buena cámara para entrar en las SLR, o cámaras análogicas si ya estás metido en la fotografía (refiriéndome en vez de cámaras de rollo desechables).
La construcción de la cámara combinado con el precio la hacen un buen atractivo, estamos hablando que puedes encontrar una Zenit 12xp inclusive en el rango de los €20-80, dependiendo del lente y el estado de la cámara. Y puedes jugar un montón con ella, porque como digo es una montura M42, si buscas en ebay podrás encontrar objetivos en gran variedad y a bajo precio para ésta cámara.
Estoy aprendiendo cada día y es una experiencia distinta, tener que ajustar la exposición totalmente mecánico, ajustar la velocidad en el dial, la apertura en el objetivo y siempre teniendo en mente el ISO que tienes.
En mi caso tengo que pensar en Blanco y Negro y en ISO 125, por ahora los leds de la cámara me están guiando para una exposición correcto, y estoy tratando de "exponer correctamente", pero estoy muy emocionado por tener más soltura y sobre o subexponer a propósito dependiendo de la escena.
Con todo esto dicho, estoy muy feliz, y muy emocionado de seguir aprendiendo. Hoy día tengo muchos proyectos por terminar de la academia de fotografía en la que estudio, así que de vez en cuando salgo con mi Zenit, y no me tengo que preocupar sobre la edición, solo camino buscando algo interesante para capturar, y veré los resultados en un mes más o menos.
