These wonderful green fields are located near the small town of Askole in the Shingar Valley of the Gilgit-Baltistan region, Pakistan. They are located at an altitude of just over 3000 meters above sea level, and look how beautiful they are! The slope of the mountain rises here rather smoothly, but still it is not a plain, and therefore the fields are arranged in terraces.
The most charming thing about these fields, in addition to their bright, life-affirming green color, is their shapes, which is unequal, of various sizes and rounded. They look like something natural, but no — this is the work of human hands, and I think there is a really huge human labor behind it. What exactly is grown here, I don't know — I didn't ask the locals that time. Although it looks like rice terraces at first glance, there is not enough water for rice. Perhaps it is some kind of grain or forage crops.
The slope with fields ends in a high cliff: here the Braldu river flows in its bed. The opposite slope is not so high and it can be seen that a stream flows into the river from that side, carrying water from the mountains. If you look at the map, you can see that the areas of greenery are relatively small and do not continue along the entire river, but are scattered in islands, marking the settlements. And around them are rather lifeless mountain slopes. I am amazed at the persistence and skill of people who can make such useful beauty!
