This winter, my wish to visit Vienna in the New Year period came true. I've always heard stories about how magical the city is during the holidays, but I couldn't even imagine how true they were until I stepped into its fairytale atmosphere. Vienna welcomed me in all its splendor – lavishly decorated, full of cheerful people and filled with smells that reminded me of the warmth of the holidays at every turn.
The first thing that greeted me was the winter cold, but even that could not dampen my enthusiasm. I headed straight for the Rathaus, the famous town hall in front of which one of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe is held. Already on the approach, I was enchanted by the light installations that hung between the buildings - they seemed like stars that came down from the sky. When I reached the square itself, the sight was stunning. Dozens of wooden houses were decorated with pine branches, twinkling lights and bows, while holiday tunes could be heard in the background.
I spent hours visiting the stalls. There was everything - from handmade decorations for the Christmas tree, to ceramic figures, to traditional Austrian cakes. I bought a few unique gifts for friends, including a beautiful snowflake candle. Of course, I couldn't resist the food either. I tried sausages, langoustines and warm germknedla filled with plum marmalade, topped with vanilla sauce. While I was enjoying the sweet bites, I warmed myself with a cup of mulled wine that I bought in a ceramic mug decorated with the symbols of Vienna.
After visiting the Rathaus, I headed towards Stephansplatz. St. Stephen's Cathedral was magnificent, illuminated by the light of candles lit by passers-by. There was silence inside, and the space was filled with warmth and peace. I stopped for a moment and enjoyed that serenity, thinking about all that this year has brought me.
I continued my walk to Graben Street, where the boutique windows were real works of art. Each shop had unique holiday decorations – from miniature Christmas trees to elaborate stars and angel figurines. I saw a huge, perfectly decorated cake in one of the windows and couldn't resist going inside. That moment when I sat down in a small, warm pastry shop with a piece of Sachertorte in front of me was like something out of a movie.
I ended the evening on the Prater, where the big wheel was lit up in colors that changed hues with each turn. When I climbed into the gondola, the view of the city took my breath away. The lamps that spread endlessly made Vienna look like a vast sea of light.
I spent New Year's Eve by the Danube. People gathered from all over the world, all with a smile on their faces, ready to see off the old and welcome the new year together. The fireworks were spectacular – the sky was covered with stars that seemed to explode into a thousand colors. We all counted down the last seconds together, and then laughter, congratulations and hugs broke out.
Vienna enchanted me with its beauty, warmth and festive atmosphere. Every moment spent in this magical city was special, and I'm sure that the memory of it will bring a smile to my face for a long time.
