🇬🇧 It was during a long motorcycle road trip in South America that we passed through the Río Negro region and its emblematic city: San Carlos de Bariloche. A stop we loved so much that we returned the following year to explore the area more deeply. It combines a lively urban life, traditions, and total immersion in Patagonian nature.
🇫🇷 C'est au cours d'un long road trip en moto en Amérique du Sud que nous sommes passés par la région de Río Negro et sa ville emblématique : San Carlos de Bariloche. Une escale que nous avons tellement appréciée que nous y sommes retournés l'année suivante pour explorer la zone plus en profondeur. Elle allie une vie urbaine animée, des traditions et une immersion totale dans la nature patagonienne.
🇪🇸 Durante un largo viaje en moto por Sudamérica pasamos por la región de Río Negro y su ciudad emblemática: San Carlos de Bariloche. Una parada que nos gustó tanto que volvimos al año siguiente para explorar la zona más a fondo. Combina una vida urbana animada, tradiciones y una inmersión total en la naturaleza patagónica.
🇬🇧 A bit of history
Located in Patagonia, in the heart of the Argentine Andes, the city of Bariloche was born at the end of the 19th century with the arrival of European settlers, mainly Swiss, German and Italian. This mix of influences shaped its architecture, gastronomy, and even some local traditions. The city grew especially after 1934 with the creation of Nahuel Huapi National Park, placing it at the center of a protected and exceptional region. Today, it remains a symbolic place where European heritage blends with Patagonian identity.

Située en Patagonie, au cœur des Andes argentines, la ville de Bariloche est née à la fin du XIXᵉ siècle avec l’arrivée de colons européens, principalement suisses, allemands et italiens. Ce mélange d’influences a marqué l’architecture, la gastronomie et même certaines traditions locales. La ville s’est surtout développée après 1934 avec la création du Parc National Nahuel Huapi, qui l’a placée au centre d’une région protégée et exceptionnelle à mes yeux. Aujourd’hui, elle reste un lieu emblématique où l’héritage européen se mêle à l’identité patagonienne.

Situada en la Patagonia, en el corazón de los Andes argentinos, la ciudad de Bariloche nació a finales del siglo XIX con la llegada de colonos europeos, principalmente suizos, alemanes e italianos. Esta mezcla de influencias marcó su arquitectura, gastronomía e incluso algunas tradiciones locales. La ciudad creció sobre todo después de 1934 con la creación del Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, que la situó en el centro de una región protegida y excepcional. Hoy sigue siendo un lugar emblemático donde la herencia europea se mezcla con la identidad patagónica.
🇬🇧 A tourist paradise
The Bariloche region is very touristic, and it deserves it. I only knew it in summer, when its lakes, mountains and forests become the perfect playground for hiking, kayaking, fishing and mountain biking. The immense Nahuel Huapi Lake, with its deep blue, offers spectacular landscapes that change with the seasons. This lake feeds the Limay River, one of the great tributaries of the Río Negro, known for its beauty and fishing opportunities. To be complete, it should be added that in winter Bariloche attracts skiers from all over the world thanks to Cerro Catedral, one of the largest ski resorts in South America.

La région de Bariloche est très touristique, et elle le mérite. Je l'ai connue seulement en été, lorsque ses lacs, ses montagnes et ses forêts deviennent le terrain de jeu idéal pour la randonnée, le kayak, la pêche et le VTT. Le lac Nahuel Huapi, immense et d’un bleu profond, offre des paysages spectaculaires et changeants selon les saisons. Ce lac alimente le fleuve Limay, l’un des grands affluents du Río Negro, connu pour sa beauté et ses possibilités de pêche. Pour être complet, il faut ajouter qu’en hiver, Bariloche attire des skieurs du monde entier grâce au Cerro Catedral, l’un des plus grands domaines skiables d’Amérique du Sud.
🇪🇸 Un paraíso turístico
La región de Bariloche es muy turística, y lo merece. Solo la conocí en verano, cuando sus lagos, montañas y bosques se convierten en el terreno de juego ideal para el senderismo, el kayak, la pesca y el ciclismo de montaña. El lago Nahuel Huapi, inmenso y de un azul profundo, ofrece paisajes espectaculares que cambian con las estaciones. Este lago alimenta al río Limay, uno de los grandes afluentes del Río Negro, conocido por su belleza y sus posibilidades de pesca. Para ser completo, cabe añadir que en invierno Bariloche atrae a esquiadores de todo el mundo gracias al Cerro Catedral, una de las estaciones de esquí más grandes de Sudamérica.
🇬🇧 Main attractions include:
- The "Circuito Chico", a thirty-kilometer tour with breathtaking viewpoints, lakes, forests, hiking trails, restaurants and picnic spots. A panoramic route not to be missed.
- The Colonia Suiza, a charming village founded by Swiss immigrants in the 19th century. Known for its crafts, alpine traditions and famous food market, it is easily accessible by a good road from the Circuito Chico.
🇫🇷 Les attractions les plus connues sont :
- Le "Circuito Chico", un tour d'une trentaine de kilomètres avec des points de vue à couper le souffle, des lacs, des forêts, des départs de randonnées, des endroits pour se restaurer et d’autres pour pique-niquer. Un parcours panoramique à ne pas rater.
- La Colonia Suiza, un charmant village fondé par des immigrants suisses au XIXᵉ siècle. Connue pour son artisanat, ses traditions alpines et son fameux marché gastronomique, elle est facilement accessible par une bonne piste depuis le Circuito Chico.
🇪🇸 Las atracciones más conocidas son:
- El "Circuito Chico", un recorrido de unos treinta kilómetros con miradores impresionantes, lagos, bosques, senderos, lugares para comer y otros para hacer picnic. Una ruta panorámica que no hay que perderse.
- La Colonia Suiza, un encantador pueblo fundado por inmigrantes suizos en el siglo XIX. Conocido por su artesanía, sus tradiciones alpinas y su famoso mercado gastronómico, es fácilmente accesible por un buen camino desde el Circuito Chico.
🇬🇧 Flavors and traditions
Bariloche is also famous for its artisanal chocolates and sweets. The town center is lined with small shops where this gourmet tradition inherited from Central Europe lives on. There is also a strong culture of craft beer, with many local microbreweries. Gastronomy, between Argentine asados and revisited Alpine dishes, is an integral part of the experience. The city also hosts cultural events, such as the Snow Festival or Easter celebrations around chocolate.
🇫🇷 Saveurs et traditions
Bariloche est aussi réputée pour ses chocolats artisanaux et ses confiseries. Le centre-ville est bordé de petites boutiques où l’on retrouve cette tradition gourmande héritée de l’Europe centrale. On y trouve également une forte culture de la bière artisanale, avec de nombreuses microbrasseries locales. La gastronomie, entre asados argentins et plats alpins revisités, fait partie intégrante de l’expérience. La ville accueille aussi des événements culturels, comme la Fête de la Neige ou les célébrations de Pâques autour du chocolat.
🇪🇸 Sabores y tradiciones
Bariloche también es famosa por sus chocolates artesanales y confitería. El centro está lleno de pequeñas tiendas donde perdura esta tradición gourmet heredada de Europa central. También hay una fuerte cultura de la cerveza artesanal, con muchas microcervecerías locales. La gastronomía, entre asados argentinos y platos alpinos reinventados, forma parte integral de la experiencia. La ciudad también acoge eventos culturales como la Fiesta de la Nieve o las celebraciones de Pascua en torno al chocolate.
🇬🇧 Between culture and nature
Beyond its grandiose landscapes, Bariloche is a gateway to the famous Route of the Seven Lakes, a spectacular itinerary leading to San Martín de los Andes, which I will present next week, as I can’t choose which photos to share—they all bring back so many good memories.

Outre ses paysages grandioses, Bariloche est une porte d’entrée vers la célèbre Route des Sept Lacs, un itinéraire spectaculaire reliant San Martín de los Andes, que je présenterai la semaine prochaine, car je n'arrive pas à trier les images à partager tellement elles me rappellent de bons souvenirs.
🇪🇸 Entre cultura y naturaleza
Más allá de sus paisajes grandiosos, Bariloche es una puerta de entrada a la famosa Ruta de los Siete Lagos, un itinerario espectacular que lleva a San Martín de los Andes, que presentaré la semana que viene, ya que no consigo elegir qué fotos compartir: todas me traen muy buenos recuerdos.
