The other week we spent two nights on the beautiful Lady Elliot Island off the coast of Harvey Bay in Queensland, Australia.
Lady Elliot has just been crowned the best snorkeling location in the world by Lonely Planet, and I can definitely agree.
I will do a more detailed post about our trip there but for now I would like to share some photos I took with my YI action camera with a dome housing.
The dome housing helps to creat the above and below water photos. And this is something I have always wanted to try and shoot.
A turtle below the water and the land out of the water.
And the lagoon on the east side of Lady Elliot Island is the perfect location to try and get these shots at high tide. As there are always sea turtles in the lagoon.
There was a bit of a current running south. So I would jump in the water at the top of the beach and float down with the current and hope to find a turtle before I got to the end of the beach. Then hope out of the water and walk back up the beach and repeat.
And man was I in luck!!
I found a couple of turtles, including this green sea turtle.
It's so cool to just swim along with these turtles; they really don't mind being so close to people. It's a feeling that never gets old. 🙂
It was hard at first to work out if I was getting the right angle for the shots of the turtle and the land as there is a lot going on while trying to take these photos.
Snorkeling, the current, and a wild animal, so it's definitely not the easiest shot.
But in the end, I really like how these shots turned out. 🐢🙌
So stay tuned for my post on our recent trip to Lady Elliot.
Absolutely beautiful! What gorgeous shots! That really worked out nicely, and there are turtles in the shallows. It makes sense, inside the reef there aren't going to be many big tiger sharks so it's a safe place for them. Great job!

The reef definitely gives the turtles great protection from the big sharks. But I did swim along side some black tip reef sharks which was really cool.
!LOL

They are usually aren't too aggressive, as long as they mind their own business I don't mind being around them. For the most part I've found most sharks don't care much about people, but I'm more careful around tigers and bulls. I've never seen a great white in all my years of diving, and I'm OK with that!
!LOL
!BBH
Yeah sharks ready don't care to much about humans especially when the visibility is great. Most of the shark attacks here in Queensland Australia are from bull sharks in murky water. And there has been a few this year already unfortunately.
We have great whites down south in the colder water. We have done cage diving with great whites in South Australia but I would never want to come face to face with a great white with our the cage...
!LOL
I won't go into murky water, it's just asking for trouble. Bulls in murky water don't mix! Tigers on occasion have attacked people in Hawaii, the one's I've seen keep their distance and are just passing by. You hate to hear about attacks, they aren't common but one little test bite to them can be enough to kill someone!
Some awesome shots in here 👌🐢 Underwater photos are always so cool 🩵
Cheers! I'm really happy with the final results 🙌🐢🐢🐢
Amazing 🙏👏👏👏👏
Cool shots, great idea with the housing. Looking forward to more of the Turtles!
Cheers mate, yes the housing makes for a great perspective. More turtle pics incoming 🐢🐢🐢🐢
Woah, I'm a sailor and was here on the exact beach to watch how the turtles lay their eggs at night - it was spectacular to watch and a unforgettable memory;) Thank you so much for bringing back the memory🤗
Have a great day.
Oh wow I'm so glad you got to witness the turtles laying on Lady Elliot! It's such an amazing experience.
I'm glad this brought back awesome memories for you!
I came to see what camera was used, and I was rather pleased that it wasn't a DSLR or Mirrorless put at risk for these shots. While I can't swim... I do enjoy photography in and around water, there's some simply stunning underwater photography out there of both wildlife and humans.
Underwater fashion editorials are insane, but this little guy is probably safer in the ocean than a catwalk :)
Yeah I can't afford the underwater housing for my Sony A7iii they are crazy expensive. And you would need a lot of confidence and trust in the housing to use it in the water.
The YI has been a beast of an action camera!
These turtles were awesome to take pics of and def safer than a catwalk !LOL
Yeah, I don't want to risk any on ... any of my cameras. I don't shoot near water nearly often enough to think about it, but its an interesting photographic niche!
amazing shot👍
Thank you 🤙🐢 these turtles are the actual stars
