In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is Todo sigue igual of the argentine band Viejas Locas
Alwayz Into Somethin: N.W.A
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Alwayz Into Somethin' of the legendary hip-hop group N.W.A (Niggaz With Attitudes).
My history with N.W.A is quite interesting, and I will be telling you about it throughout this post. They weren't the first rap band I listened to, but they were very important in reconnecting me with the genre and this time delving deeper into it.
Since my teenage years, I used to play the multiplayer version of GTA San Andreas, where I used to play in Roleplay mode. In roleplay mode, you have to play a character as if it were real life, so I remember that I had to play as a gang member. As a good gang member of that era, it was obvious that from time to time we would put on a stereo with songs from that era. That's how I got to know some of the main artists of the genre, but I didn't really delve into it that much.
My interest was piqued when I saw a movie called Explicit Lyrics. The documentary tells the story of one of the most iconic groups in the history of Gangsta Rap: N.W.A (Niggas With Attitudes). The first thing that caught my attention was that I already knew three of the band's main artists from before: Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E. So my first reaction was, “How did these geniuses all start out in the same band?” Letras Explícitas shows both the rise of the group and its inevitable decline, marked by disputes with their manager and internal tensions. Finally, the members split up and took their fight to the music stage, where they dedicated several diss tracks to each other.
N.W.A was very important in helping me rediscover my love for hip-hop and delve much deeper into the genre. If it weren't for that movie, I would never have discovered legendary artists such as Eric B, Rakim, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Mc Eiht and Big Pun, or groups such as Cypress Hill, Compton Most Wanted, Westside Connection, DMX, World Class Wreckin Cru, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Wu-Tang Clan.
I have several songs from the group that became my favorites: Straight Outta Compton, Chin Check, Express Yourself, Gangsta Gangsta, Dope Man, and my choice for today: Always Into Somethin'.
