The Score is the second and final studio album by hip hop trio Fugees. The album was released on February 13, 1996 on Columbia Records. The album was primarily produced by the Fugees themselves, erry Duplessis and Warren Riker, with additional production by Salaam Remi, John Forté, Diamond D and Shawn King. The album was recorded between June and November 1995. The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip hop that would come to dominate the hip-hop music scene in the mid- to late-1990s.
The Score was a huge commercial success, selling more than 21 million copies worldwide. It also topped the US Billboard 200 chart upon its release. And it also topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for eight weeks, the longest stay at number one for a hip hop group, and also topped the 1996 year-end chart. The album The Score became the third best-selling album of 1996 in the United States and led to the group gaining worldwide recognition.
The album received generally positive reviews and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 39th Grammy Awards, winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the song "Killing Me Softly". Additionally, the album was included on the list of 200 Definitive Albums in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As of February 2021, The Score has been certified seven-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). To evaluate The Score album in general; The album is truly amazing and has received critical acclaim over the years, becoming one of the best albums of the 1990s as well as one of the best hip hop albums of all time. There are great songs on The Score album, but my favorites are "Ready or Not" and "Killing Me Softly". Really, both are great songs, it's hard to say which one is more great.
Fugees - Ready or Not
"Ready or Not" is a song that advocates life-changing reflections on incarceration, exile, and bravado. Wyclef Jean's opening verse captures the harrowing reality of prison life, Pras Michel shares deep insights into the refugee experience, and Lauryn Hill's closing lines are a testament to her unrivaled presenting skills. "Ready or Not" is a hip hop classic that a trailblazer in a sea of mediocrity and undoubtedly cemented its place in music history.
