The roots will get bound up and choke the plant out.
A little bit of roots popping out is normal and not very harmful, but in natural soil there is not this limitation, so we try to avoid it as much as possible, but even the bigger plants will have roots popping out during flowering cycle.
I have to get bigger pots I think.
