The freestyle clinic at the Middle East

10 years ago a group of friends decided to open up their rehearsal space and allow strangers to come get all up on their microphones.

The night was eventually called The Freestyle Clinic . … still is actually.

However TFC is no longer held in the obscure industrial section of Everett over by the Encore Casino on Norman Street.

As of July ‘23 it’s now going down on the last Sunday of every month,

at the iconic Middle East night club in Cambridge MA.

TFC’s only house rule is no written rhymes, or at least that’s the idea really.

TFC is about going out on a limb,

participating in the art of expression in an environment that’s supportive and where people can learn about performing, themselves, and each other.

DJ Franky Language and MC Seti Tzu hold it down, as they have done together for dozens of years, but regularly have guest producers come in and bless the crowd .

Cambridge is a great place to come out for the night, especially in the summer time. Recreational cannabis is legal here, so you can smoke pretty much out in the middle of Central Square and nobody cares,

and so people do and it’s not a big deal or anything but just no beer or white claws outside

except for this champagne cann.

The freestyle clinic unfortunately went into hiatus for a while so a lot of folks actually didn’t see each other much outside of the TFC meetups.

People come from all over New England and from all walks of life as TFC was the common ground many of the resulting friendships were rooted in.

Regular visits to the clinic are a great way to build friendships, further develop the craft, and promote one’s own latest projects, as music is an amazing medium for growth.

Many of TFC alumni have gone on to put out amazing projects and would probably credit the time spent in the clinic as being a big part of their success.
