One of the greatest influence of music which is evident and undeniable is seen in education and in all that pertains to learning either formally in the school system or informally through parents or guardians. Music is useful for entertainment purpose but more than this, it is important and instrumental for educative purposes aswell. Through music, learning and knowledge can be communicated and understood in an easy and simplified manner.
Right from the olden days and previous generations, music has been used to communicate knowledge and learning in schools from day to day. For example, i remembered how we used to line up on the assembly ground in the morning singing different songs whose lyrics are educative, instructional, wisdom loaded and prayerful. Through this, the students starts the day on a bright note as music cheers up and brightens mood. There are four major ways by which music impacts learning as seen in schools which are as follows:
• MUSIC AS A TOOL FOR LEARNING IN SCHOOL
Right from early childhood education, music through simple songs has been used to communicate knowledge which are valuable and basic to these young ones which is the way they can easily learn and grasp things. For example, i remembered i learnt the English Alphabets and some other basic lessons through music. Through music, it makes it interesting, fun filled and easy to comprehend which are all needed for effective teaching and learning at that phase of life based on the perculiarity.
• MUSIC AS A SKILL LEARNT IN SCHOOL
(music class, music school, talent discovery)
Music is a major subject taught in some primary and secondary schools even up till higher institutions of learning like the Universities and by this, a skill learnt and acquired which some are professionals in it up until now. For example, the major missionary schools back then like the Anglican, Baptist, Catholics etc don't joke with music especially Church Music which produced several musicians, artistes, organists, instrumentalists, music directors and so on. This helps in talent discovery and skill acquisition which is what some lived on till today.
• MUSIC AS AN ENTERTAINMENT IN SCHOOL
Music is also impactful in schools as it entertains both the students and others. Back in school then, we used to hold some activities which involved music like cultural songs and dance during school parties, cheorography, dance dramas, song presentations and all. All these aside been educative are also entertaining which really helped us alot back then. I remembered that during my undergraduate days in the University, various musicians and artistes came and through this i was able to see them and to appreciate their live performance even as i am entertained. Also, the annual Christmas carol concert organised by the University management is something i always looked forward to back then even as i watch undergraduate music students as they performs.
• MUSIC PROMOTES LOVE, UNITY AND PEACE IN SCHOOLS/NATIONALLY
Almost all schools right from primary upto the higher institutions of learning whether public or private have their anthems which symbolises and identifies them. Also, this promotes love and peace amidst the students knowingfully well they are of the same citadel of learning even though families, background, religion, ethnicity may differ. Also, singing of the national anthem in schools also promotes national peace and integration.
Therefore, music is key for learning and for knowledge aside its usefulness in entertainment and other things. Music and schooling has been agelong duo with the impacts undeniable and consistency seen overtime. Both in formal and informal learning, music found relevance. Music is one of the things that has the ability to affect every area of life. I don't even know where to say it's power is strongest. In education, music plays a very vital role that can not be overlooked. Sometimes I wonder how I even mastered the thirty six States and their capitals Lol. Music is a great learning in learning
