It's imprinted in our brains. Whenever we take ownership of something we have to make it our own by stamping our mark on it so even a newly decorated home that has been decorated in the most neutral colours possible the first thing we do is slap blue paint on the walls to make a statement:
THIS IS MINE!
Bought a new car? "I must get some car mats and one of those air freshener things." This is mine! :-)
