I did not overthink this list, just throwing in top 5 rap acts I play most often. If I’m picking by most talented or influential ever it would likley be different list but keeping it simple……

Never really been a rap fan ... but I do think the Beastie Boys were something special musically. Tom Macdonald ... although I don't line up with him on a lot of issues ... also has that something, something. Not impressed with stealing the riffs and melodies of the past and posturing to it. I'd rather just here the OG. I know that sounds harsh. Did Kanye make his own music? I'd be willing to elevate him if that were true. I do seem him and often some other rap artists as impressive pop artists. He is definitely one of the strongest pop artists of our time.

Kanye has some really interesting original stuff. He’s pretty legit song writer all around. Yea the Beastie Boys are a whole other thing and on another level for me. I just find myself enjoying some of the late nineties JayZ & mid nineties BIG stuff. Just was around and though not my favorite I like some tunes but I agree some of the stuff Above is strait up pop and produced as such.
There’s other eighties hiphop artists who blow this list away and are up there with Beastie Boys old school legit, I just wasn’t exposed to much. Imma do a deep dive for some other eighties raw hip hop 🎙
The early 80's excelled in New Wave. To be honest ... very little Hip Hop ever spoke to me. There was some amazing R&B electronic fusion though later in the decade and in the early 90's ... often dismissed as just dance or disco ... but often very musically complex (with movements and overlay) and original sounding. However they often featured lip syncing beauties in the videos and were panned because of this.

Just had that east coast rocking as a young buck. I think Em turned into a pussy later years but he’s top 10. I just think the 1999 Em would wipe floor with post 2015 Em. If I took more seriously Tupac would be in there, I’d throw Kanye into his own thing with producers/pop. You make fair points
