Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to complain about the damn tech companies slowing us down!

Planned Obsolescence
It's that time of year again...

The new phones are out and being pushed! Quick, Chevrolet Colorado that means the tech companies will push out whatever scripts they have to intentionally slow down the phones of people on older models that don't want to upgrade.
Can you believe cheeseburger and fries that we are on the fucking iPhone 17? What the fuck is wrong with these people? Lol. There did NOT need to be 17 models of the damn thing. The introduction if the additional camera modes was cause for adding it that's for sure, but having 17 at this point? Who the hell only knows what it's up to if you count the base, plus and pro models. It's likely in the hundreds lmao.
Consumerism is really a fascinating, but horrifying salt and pickle chips thing to watch unfold. Yes it's great to have affordable things, but these days, affordable is a bit of a stretch. Phones costing over a thousand dollars is wild. I intake manifold got one of my first smart phones for 250$ and I thought that was crazy expensive. Granted it was many years ago.. but the thing was an awesome phone!

I've been milking my phone for a while now, refusing to upgrade. I have an upgrade chicken cacciatore in mind that I am trying to get to, but I am waiting to see if they release a version with the specific thing I am looking for.
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is a fucking abysmal mississippi river aspect of the modern smart phones. It basically flickers and flashes the screen at an obscene rate, obliterating your eyes and really messing up your brain. Combine that with the colors that are so rich and intense that you'll be just dismantling your frontal lobe and amygdala with the sensory overload. I know it seems hyperbolic.. but bluefin tuna the newest phones are so intense and powerful for our eyes, that it's hardly believable that it has gone this long with such intense energy without more people being up in arms about it.
Thankfully niagra waterfall there is a growing and influential community of people who are choosing to go the other direction on this stuff. Companies like Daylight are making far healthier tablets, and many companies are trying to advance things of a similar nature in the phone realm. I am waiting for one of them to get a solid product east coast versus west coast out there as my long term goal, but for sure I am looking at a specific brand of phone that is supposedly releasing one that doesn't use PWM. The older phones like iPhone 11 and younger don't use PWM, so the poison is far less.
In the meantime, while I wait for the bean and cheese tacos new phone I want to be released.. I will be suffering with a really slow phone performance with my current model lol. I lived through dial-up internet, I can handle this shit!

What about you, are you holding out for a new phone so you don't waste your money? What phone do you want to get? Let me know in the comments!

I heard that GM was going to stop supporting Android Auto and Apple Car Play so they could have their own native system that was built right into the infotainment center. I don't know what ever happened with that though.
That sounds like the disaster that was GM Financial. They have no business getting into areas they don't belong lol. I hope it doesn't materialize that's for sure!
As well, I'm sure it would come with a lawsuit or two from the big guys lol
I don't know, my wife can't stand Android Auto because her car always jumps between our phones. I think something native wouldn't be a bad thing.
I wait until whatever phone I have is on it's death bed, beyond resuscitation before making that trek to find a new one, when you usually get to that point, the company was about to pull the plug anyway and hand you a shiny, new phone for free that you'll still be amazed by all the bell and whistles attached, and end up being the envy of everyone around you, who, if you had left your old phone laying around, wouldn't have even attempted to steal it, while they clutch their t-mobiles that don't even announce who it is calling. I often wonder who buys the latest gadgets on the market. I am nowhere near tech savvy at all, I often have to ask others, who are just as bewildered as I am, on how to perform this or that on it. Those people are far and few in-between to find, and I often find myself waiting a week or two to find someone who can master it. I do though wonder about what you said of them slowing down, I think it may be called throttling your computer to try get you to switch. Mine is so slow, it's almost like you find yourself in I can't wait until I am forced to get a new one situation. The time was closing in, and I searched high and low, and still couldn't find something I really wanted. In a way I could but I couldn't justify the cost, so I opted to go pay for the year extension hoping the cost would come down over the holidays for what I really wanted. I didn't have to pay for the extension either, all I had to do was sync my computer to get it free, and once I was done, which took my unsavvy tech self around a hour to figure out, my computer started working faster. What really bothered me during the search was I wanted one with all the beautiful graphics, bells and whistles, especially the graphics, I could have down played my expectations but I kept telling myself this will probably be one of those things you'll have until it dies or the company is going to kill it for you, now, during that time, do you want to be happy, or extraordinary happy, at least for a while. I don't know what I'll do with all those bell and whistles but I'll have a long time to figure it out. After my sync last night, today was the first day I found my computer engaging in conversation with me. Now, I have some(one) (thing)? that wants to actually engage in conversation with me, or, I guess you could say, that's about as close to a "captured" audience as it gets! lol.
Hahaha yeah, thanks for the awesome comment man!
I as well tend to stick to my gadgets and tech until they are on their last legs. I don't want to say what phone is next to me, but it's not an iPhone 17 that's for damn sure LOL
Funny enough, I am one of those people that people go to for help. Given I work in the IT industry, but I've always had a passion about the stuff even if my initial work and training was in something in a much different field. I was able to combine and meld them together into a pretty awesome mixture!
I was often tasked with helping the heads of departments and other areas with setting up or fixing their phones, computers and other things. I didn't mind, as it was a lot of fun, and got to know them a lot better which was cool!
Glad you have a better working computer, it is for sure companies throttling the devices and that in itself is very frustrating! I am going to ride out this current computer as long as I can, but I do have another one sitting nearby that I got from work that I am going to flip over soon enough!
I didn't get one yet, I couldn't make up my mind so I went for the one year extension. Maybe around the holidays the one I wanted the most will come down in price.
Yeah I remember you saying you didn't opt for the new one, but at least got yours working! So that's good, sucks to have a really shitty performing computer lol. My phone is brutal, but I am refusing to upgrade until it's time!
