RE: You Can't Call It Meat - Or Can You?

A few years ago, I remember a new veggie burger came onto the market. They advertised it as bleeding like real meat. The "blood" was beetroot. As a vegetarian, it seriously put me off, even though I love beetroot. It was obvious they were still marketing to meat eaters. Having said all that I use the term "veggie sausage", because I don't know what else to call it!

Oh yeah the whole blood thing was going too far haha. I grew up vego and you had very limited meat substitute options ..mainly nut meat in a can and dried TVP. Gross. Most plant based things are full of sugar and salt etc so I'd only eat them occasionally anyway. There's so many tastier options.

I agree. I've got an app on my phone. It scans the barcode to see if the product is healthy or not. Most veggie products score badly. I don't each much of it, either.

I'm interested in that app!
Can you share it?

Yes, it's called Yuka. It tells you how much sugar, fat etc is in food. I use it to stop myself buying things that are laden with sugar.

In the Netherlands they have this Nutri score label on products.
That only gives an average health score for a product based on sugar, fat, salt....

But the stupid thing about the label is that it represents a relative score compared to similar products. So a pizza could have an A because other pizza's have more fat and salt, but Greek Yoghurt with 10% fat can have a C.
The yoghurt isn't compared with the pizza, but with other yoghurts.

I'll try the app, thanks!

Yes, I find the app a lot clearer. It just depends what you are trying to cut out. It does make you stop and think.

Bummer, the app doesn't work on Dutch products I read in the reviews.
