Mushroom Burger, Mushroom Chips, and Fermented Rice From the Locals

in Market Fridaylast year (edited)

Happy Friday!

It is Market Friday again by @dswigle! We are now in the last month of the year. Time flies so fast, right? I just noticed that the more I get older, the faster the time feels. Am I the only one?

Last time, we went hiking in the mountains of our province. It is a relief to see some nature after a week of work and screens. Our eyes are always glued to those damn machines. We sit for long hours, forgetting to straighten up our backs. A perfect way to break this cycle is to get some fresh air from the mountains!

We went early for the day. We brought our water tumbler and shades with us. As we were on the way, we saw this little burger shop at the foot of the mountain. It is interesting that a local is selling mushroom burgers.

We parked on the side of the road to get some. We can just smell the fried patties a few feet away. Ahh~ the aroma is just so inviting.

The lady was the only one doing the cooking on the small stall. She had the brightest smile for the day. I love meeting cheerful and full spirit people. They just make the day better, don't they?

She handed me a laminated paper where the orders are listed. They also sell some mushroom products that were not on the list. She told us that they also sell mushroom pizza, rice wine, and fermented rice.

I noticed that some of the items on the menu were covered with white tape. Probably because of inflation, they have to change prices.

We ordered the mushroom burger with egg and cheese. In addition to that, as a support to the locals, we also bought fermented rice and mushroom chips.

The nice lady started to put oil in her small burger griller. The griller is enough to cook 3 burgers at the same time. I was just watching her as she cracks the egg perfectly. It was just satisfying to watch, hehe.

As she was frying, I asked her where did they get those mushrooms for consumption. She said that they grow it in their backyard and sometimes, they go to their land on the highlands to get some. She said that they also sell mushroom patties. I was so amazed at how locals are so sustainable. These mushrooms are organic and free from pesticides. I will choose this any day over the commercialized Mcdonald's cheeseburger.

This is fermented rice. I forgot to ask what is the local name of this delicacy. It was displayed on the tables provided for the customers. Per tub costs $1.08, which is 60 Philippine pesos.

I asked a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable about local food. I asked him what is the local name for fermented rice. @eunoia101 told me that it is called "tapoy". We lived in the same region so basically, he knows everything about agriculture and local stuff. A blessing for me who did live 3/4s of my life in the city.

The mushroom burgers were served after 20 minutes. I understand that the nice lady is the only one doing all the work so I do not mind waiting long. The smell was so amazing! My mistake was I bite too soon I burned my tongue, ugh what a bummer. That is what I get for not letting it cool first, haha!

For me, it tasted like an earthy crop and it has a subtle texture of onion. The cheese and cucumber were perfect addition to the earthy taste of the mushroom. The egg was a bit overcooked but no big deal at all. A mushroom burger for $0.81 is not bad! Also, it is very healthy, no preservatives on the patties itself. We took a seat on the white, plastic chairs as we munched away those delicious mushroom burgers.

After eating, we decided to buy their mushroom chips. They are also the ones who made this product. Apparently, they use oyster mushrooms for the chips. The chips were a bit bland for me, perhaps it needs a litte bit of salt or a vinegar dip. The mushroom chips cost $1.44, which is 80 Philippine peso.

We were so stuffed with mushroom burgers and chips. I was so happy that we tried this local food, and we were able to support the locals.

We paid for our food and we said goodbye to the lady. We wished that the next time we go hiking again, we will have some mushroom burgers again.

That is it for this blog. I will see you at the next one!

It must be very delicious.!

It has this earthy aroma 🤤 it was worth the wait since the lady is the only one managing the stall. 😊

Oh how I like mushrooms. This is my first time seeing a burger mushroom.
It's mouthwatering. Do they have a branch anywhere in the city?

Unfortunately I think they do not have. It is a small local business in our province. I am hoping that one day her business will have branches in the future.

Hoping and praying. Hehe

I wonder how the mushroom chips tasted and the fermented rice too. We do not have that kind of products here.

The chips tasted like a sweetpotato, but it was bland for me. The fermented rice taste like a rice with vinegar, it has a distinct smell too.
