The Rastro is a normal fresh market that combines the selling of food and non food goodies in Spain. Each town has its market day once a week. The one that we have in our toen has been assigned Monday as the fresh market day and they are allowed to sell any products at designated stall number. From what I have heard from the stall owner they pay a certain fee and sell their products or goods from 9:30AM -3:00 PM.

A New Site For the Market ...

The fresh market had been moved from the street parallel to the main road to this new site. The said new site used to be an empty plot which was very rough and now the town hall made it into the new Rastro because the old location had been causing traffic congestions. Moreover, this new site is reserved for the flea or fresh market on Mondays... for the rest of the week, it is a huge parking area for the locals and tourists visiting the promenade.

Here, mostly farmers sell their fresh produce and some retailers of fruits and veggies get their goodies from agents of huge wholesalers. Andalusia is best known for its olive oil, avocados and mangoes. The huge-scale farmers turned to planting mangoes in the last 8-10 years instead of planting avocados because the latter consumed too much water.

Exotic fruits...

Most of the exotic fruits such as cherimoyas, persimon, guavas, figs and many more are grown in plastic tents. The locals in as much as they have land in the campo grow their own veggies as well as harvest their own olives in their backyard and have them pressed at the local Cooperative.

Cherimoya

The cherimoya is sweet, fruity and tasty; it combines all the best flavors of strawberry, raspberry and pear with a hint of cinnamon. Source

This is my ultimate fruit, I just love its taste. I only get this here in Andalusia from the months of September til January. The current price of cherimoya per kilo is around 2.40 Euros at the moment and the same goes to the price of the Mango. Guavas are not so common, but they are also grown here. I just had the sweetest guava in years.

I heart icon.png Spices .....

I never failed to visit stalls that sells spices and last Monday, I got powdered cumin at 2.50 Euros for 170 grams, the powder of which originally came from India and have been refilled in Murcia, Spain.

The experiences we can live in markets like these are totally enchanting. Being in direct contact with the different fruits and spices are some of the moments I enjoy the most. And when this is also seasoned with culinary passion the momey becomes magical and very inspiring to the senses. What a great time you had in that market. I am curious to know the custard apple fruit. Take care at all times, a hug.

Indeed, I agree with you, sometimes it is mesmerizing to be in front of those spices and eventually think of the so many dishes that could use them. The custard apple in my country the Philippines are much smaller and have a rough skin. The Cherimoya is bigger maybe double in size and has a fine skin. They are very sweet when ripe and taste is similar to soursop, fleshy and juicy. You take care too and enjoy your day. Thanks for visiting!

Strolling along the beach after shopping, seeing the blue color of the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, what more could you ask for, and the best thing is that the activity is reactivated, people sell their products

Yeah, good for the farmers and other sellers... the only thing is it can also be cold along the promenade. Tourists still come to experience the market and its flair. It is a combination if spanish and arabic culture/environment because of its proximity to Morroco.

What is that big white tower on the seashore with a chair (?) behind it?

Hi! That is the lifeguard tower, I think we have two more, one on the other end of the Promenade and one on the Los Llanos Beach which is farther down on the right side of this tower about 800 meters.

Thank you for the reply. I am from Hungary, and I have not visited any other country so far. We do not have a sea. We have rivers and lakes, and I visited some of them, but I have not seen any similar towers at their shores so far.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings from Hungary.

Thank you so much @xplosive. I am from Vienna and we are only staying in Spain during the wintertime because it is warmer here than there. So we are neighbors, have you not visited Austria yet?

I would love to stay in/around Spain for the same reason. It is (much) warmer in the winter.

So we are neighbors, have you not visited Austria yet?

No. I explored some parts of Hungary, but no other countries so far.

It's like a swap meet over here but yours has a beautiful location, close to the beach. It's a nice resting place for tired feet.

Hahaha.. I agree! And there are so many resting cafes and bars where you could sit, enjoy the Med Sea and the passers-by.

Hmm, daw atis pala yang cherimoya. Ka aliwalas ng playa so clean nice e walking walking.

Atis is similar, pero ito ay very fleshy and juicy. And cherimoya has a fine skin while atis is rough.

The place is very beautiful ate but the most attractive is that huge pile of manggoes. 😂 I really love manggoes.

I know you can get a lot of mangoes in your area... We are lucky here, the mangoes are big but sweet when ripe. We also have seen many mango plantations so the supply is flooding the market which pushes the prices down to the relief of the consumers.

All places that you shared with us are interesting. You are just like touring us always.

Yeah, oh dibah! that is the purpose of me sharing the images and the views.

Yes!
