My old laptop used to shut down during summer because of overheating, and I ended up buying one of those external cooling pads with fans that you place the laptop on, and it solved the issue.

Ahan, exactly. The cooling pad was indeed the saviour. The shutting down was probably a safety measure by the laptop. (Just maybe).
