In one of my older posts, I wrote about how much of what is taught about group dynamics relates to family dynamics. Since then, I have been using it in psychology to understand family dynamics. Although the relationship between the two concepts is not a one-to-one comparison, I believe there is a lot we can learn from successful groups that can be applied to families.

The world today appears to be more connected than before, with the existence of social media and video calls. However, there is a significant decay in the fabric that makes up society - the family.

The family is one of the most fundamental elements in society, if not the most fundamental. The family itself can function as a society, having projects it wants to achieve, moving forward towards progress, attaining new heights, experiencing conflicts and protests, and bringing new life into existence while protecting life and property.

Society would not exist without the family.

There is abundant proof of the breakdown of families before our very eyes. The divorce rates are currently at 50%, with one in two marriages ending in divorce in the United States. Worldwide, the rate is 1.8 per 1000. Divorce rates have been on the rise globally since the 1960s. With divorce rates increasing, the number of single-parent households has also been rising.

Child custody arrangements also contribute to more unstable living situations for children. The amount of conflict leading to domestic violence, child neglect, and abuse shows that families are not living up to expectations.

What can be done to build more cohesiveness within the family? What are we missing? Why can't we stay together?

Group Cohesion

Group cohesion refers to the degree of unity, camaraderie, and cooperation among members of a group. It represents the strength of the bond that keeps the group together and allows them to work towards a common goal.

Groups that are cohesive share a sense of belonging, trust, and purpose, and communicate effectively among themselves.

While these ideas work for organizations, I have found them to be applicable to other groups that live together where strife and conflict can occur.

Before we continue, I would like to address the fact that even with these numbers, I doubt the divorce rate reaches the number of failed organizations that exist.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, I think part of the problem is that society has normalized the failure of marriages and relationships so much that it is only evident that you watch these unions destroy before our eyes.

Family Cohesion

If we are going to see families work again, there needs to be some of the features that work in cohesive groups within the family.

One of these features is a sense of belonging and identity. People should be able to say that they belong to a family, and this family should give them at least a sense of pride as they share a collective identity with other group members.

Each member should support each other. There is no greater love than to share your time, your treasure, your talent, and your touch. I have always said that the true measure of love is closely linked to the quality of what is given. The quality of support within the groups must be evident; this will eventually group more of that identity that is so needed.

There has to be active listening and effective communication between the members of the group. If you cannot get to the root of what each member is trying to say, there is bound to be conflict. It is more than just hearing words that are said; it is investigating each statement and summarizing the inquiries and the suggestions in a manner that fosters more communication.

There needs to be norms and roles in each group. It should be based on what works for the group and not what ought to work for the group. For the union to work, there have to be expectations and met expectations to be precise.

In conclusion, it is evident that the breakdown of families is a concerning issue in today's society. High divorce rates, single-parent households, and conflicts within families reflect the challenges we face in maintaining strong family units. However, by drawing lessons from successful cohesive groups, we can work towards building stronger family bonds.

Group cohesion, which involves a sense of belonging, support, effective communication, and shared goals, plays a crucial role in fostering healthy relationships within families. By cultivating a collective identity, where family members take pride in their connection and share a common purpose, we can strengthen the family unit.

Supporting one another through time, treasure, talent, and touch exemplifies the highest form of love within families. It is essential to actively listen and communicate effectively, understanding the needs and perspectives of each family member. By fostering an environment where open dialogue and empathy thrive, conflicts can be addressed and resolved more constructively.

Establishing clear norms and roles within the family helps set expectations and promote a sense of structure and stability. These norms should be tailored to the unique dynamics of the family, embracing what works best for them.

Building family cohesion requires effort, understanding, and a commitment to fostering strong relationships. It involves prioritizing the well-being and happiness of every family member, creating an environment where love, trust, and support flourish.

If you find yourself struggling with cohesion within your relationships, it is crucial to reflect on these principles and actively work towards implementing them. Seek opportunities to strengthen your family bonds, communicate openly, and support one another. Remember that building cohesion takes time and effort, but the rewards of a strong and united family are immeasurable.

By prioritizing family cohesion and dedicating ourselves to fostering healthy relationships, we can overcome the challenges that threaten the fabric of the family unit. Let us strive for stronger families, knowing that they are the foundation of a thriving society.

How do you define family cohesion, and why do you think it is important? Have you noticed any changes in family dynamics and cohesion in recent years? If so, what do you think might be contributing factors?

In your opinion, what are some common challenges that families face in maintaining strong bonds and unity? What role do you believe communication plays in building family cohesion? How can families improve their communication practices?

Can you share any personal experiences or examples of how a strong sense of belonging and identity within a family has positively impacted relationships?
