A call is made to observe 3I/Atlas from all observatories.
The international asteroid warning network began a campaign to monitor Tres and Atlas for 3 months; This is part of planetary defense, as it is evidently part of any defense to know what potential enemies are like, which does not mean that 3I/Atlas is a real enemy, nor is it coming to impact Earth, although that part does not appear in the media and social networks.
And of course, this is not a secret or discreet operation, as some journalists imply, in fact, any astronomy fan can participate in it, you have to fill out a form and, of course, you have to have minimal knowledge of astronomy and equipment to do so, but it is the most logical and normal thing in the world.
If you are not an astronomy fan, it is very difficult for you to know about calls of this type, because they are made almost every year and depending on the objectives, there are years in which they have been made up to two times; 3I/Atlas is real, planetary defense is also real and what has just been called is a real, concrete fact.
So let's clarify the issues because in reality the issue is very serious, we are talking about designing a defense system against asteroids and comets, which does not yet exist, if a comet or an asteroid several kilometers in diameter really came on a collision course with the Earth, we do not have a defense system, unless we detect it many years in advance.
The international campaign specifically seeks to improve astrometric measurements of comets, taking as reference 3I/Atlas, who organizes it as the international asteroid warning network, it is an independent organization managed as an international collaboration under the support of the United Nations through the Office of Outer Space Affairs and also the International Astronomical Union.
Obviously, the space agencies also participate in it, so there is NASA, the European Space Agency, JAXA, which is the Japanese Space Agency, and also the China National Space Administration, which is the Chinese Space Agency, joined in 2018.
This is not extraordinary, because practically every year a campaign of this type is organized, sometimes two campaigns, it is not something fixed because it depends on whether there is an interesting object to observe, normally they have been asteroids, 3I/Atlas because the campaign focuses on the most prominent object of the moment and in previous years, for example, they were asteroids like Apophis.
Last year, the asteroid 2024-YR4 was monitored, which shortly after being discovered had a risk of impact with the Earth of up to 3.1% for December 22, 2032, but thanks to this campaign and more observations, a more precise trajectory of the asteroid could be traced and currently the risk of impact with the Earth is ruled out, although curiously the risk of impact with the Moon increased.
There is currently a 4.3% chance that this asteroid will end up hitting the lunar surface and it is a risk high enough that some researchers and experts have recommended launching a mission to divert or destroy it, since an impact with the moon would launch a cloud of debris that could easily reach Earth's orbit and thereby endanger our satellite networks.
This initiative focuses on overcoming the unique challenges that comets present, although 3I/Atlas has many strange things and anomalies that do not correspond to what we know of a typical comet in the solar system, but this follow-up will give us more data on the structure, trajectory, light emission and composition of 3I/Atlas, it is an extraordinary opportunity.
