For the first time they manage to control and tune a time crystal

For the first time in history, scientists managed to connect a time crystal, one of the most mysterious and theoretical forms of matter, to an external system. The achievement led by researchers at Finland's Aalto University represents a milestone that could transform applied quantum physics and drive the creation of much more stable and powerful quantum computers.

Time crystals were originally proposed by Frank Wilczek, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics, who imagined a quantum system capable of oscillating eternally in time without consuming energy, a kind of perpetual motion machine at the quantum level. Unlike conventional crystals that repeat in space, like atoms in a diamond structure, time crystals repeat in time entering into continuous and stable cycles, even in their lowest energy state.

For a long time this idea was considered impossible until in 2021 Google and Stanford managed to create one of these crystals using the Paramore quantum computer, now the European group went further. He managed to connect a time crystal to another physical system, something no one had done before.

The experiment used Magnons, quasi-particles generated in a helium-3 superfluid at temperatures close to absolute zero. When the researchers bombarded the fluid with radio waves, the magnons began to oscillate synchronously, forming a time crystal that remained active for several minutes or 108 full cycles before disappearing. During this period, the crystal was coupled to a nearby mechanical oscillator, creating a direct interaction between both entities. The team discovered that this connection could be adjusted in real time, modifying the properties of the time crystal depending on the frequency and amplitude of the oscillator. In simple terms, they found a way to control and tune a quantum crystal, something that previously seemed impossible.

This means that time crystals could function as precision quantum sensors, capable of measuring infinitesimal fluctuations in space-time, but perhaps the most exciting application is in quantum computing; These crystals could serve as memory and temporal reference bases for quantum processors, prolonging the stability of the qubits, the biggest obstacle of this technology today, because they last much longer than current quantum systems, they could allow continuous calculations free of the limitations of coherence.

And now, tell me, if time can be crystallized, controlled and connected, will it one day be possible to transform the flow of time itself into a quantum processing tool? Madness, you tell me.
