Record in controlling the energy of Nuclear fusion

In the quest for the energy of the future just received an interesting boost, the American startup Zap Energy announced that its engineering test platform called Century achieved a historic performance, more than 100 continuous plasma shots releasing 39 kW of energy in the test chamber, a 20-fold jump in average sustained power since the system began operating in 2024.

The achievement is impressive because Century does not use fusion fuel or generate fusion reactions yet, but it was designed to simulate the conditions of a real plant, the idea is to integrate and validate three fundamental elements: repetitive pulsed energy systems, ultra-resistant electrodes and liquid metal walls responsible for absorbing the extreme heat of the plasma and transferring it efficiently.

The secret is in ZAP's exclusive method, the Z-Pinch, stabilized by shear flow. Unlike traditional approaches based on magnets, giant superconductors or ultra-high-power lasers, SFS uses electrical pulses that compress the plasma and its own magnetic field, creating stability in a more compact and potentially economical way.

To maintain the system, Century circulates just over 1,000kg of liquid bismuth and employs a 200kW heat exchanger, plus engineering improvements such as a redesigned nose ring and high-flow cooling systems. The impact is significant, if in the first operations in June 2024 the platform barely exceeded 1.4 4 kW. The results now validate that a Z-Pinch-based fusion plant can be viable on a commercial scale.
