Why building Space Stations with Stationships works so well?

in StemSocial18 hours ago

What is a Stationship? It's a variant of a SpaceX Starship customized to be used as a Space Station.

  • Smaller tanks: Optimized to reach LEO, as engines are not needed afterward.

  • Larger cabin area: This allows it to hold more people and facilities.

  • Ready in one launch: Built entirely on Earth and ready to use upon reaching its location.

  • Docking in multiple configurations: With four mid-body docking ports, one on the nose, and the ability to clamp together at the engine bays, building a large space station is a bit like building with LEGO.

  • Independent: Each Stationship is completely self-contained, providing a large safety factor and enabling use while additional modules are launched.

  • One daily: With a dedicated Starship factory, one Stationship, with a usable cabin space similar to the current ISS, could be launched daily - for many years - Just ponder that for a second. 🤔
