L- Histidine: Functions, Benefits, and Potency in the Human body

In this post, I will discuss about substances or sources of nutrients that are needed by the human body but cannot be produced by the human body, called Essential Proteins.


Introduction

Protein is a very important macronutrient for the human body, it plays a role in building and repairing body tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and maintaining fluid balance in the body. There are two types of protein, called essential and non-essential proteins. Essential protein is a type of protein that must be supplied through food because the human body cannot produce it on its own. There are nine types of essential amino acids, namely histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. In this post, first I discussed about Histidine.


About Histidine

L - Histidine or Histidine is a type of essential protein needed in the production of enzymes in the human body. As an amino acid, histidine is one of the building blocks of protein and plays a role in protein production. For adults, histidine is not essential, and for infants and people with kidney problems, histidine is considered an essential amino acid.

Histidine is essential for several biological activities, including protein synthesis, energy production, and cell metabolism. Histidine also serves as a precursor for the synthesis of histamine, a neurotransmitter involved in the nervous system. One of the main functions of histidine is as a precursor for histamine synthesis.

Histamine is involved in a variety of physiological processes, including allergic response, inflammation, and sleep-wake regulation. In addition, histamine also functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain and central nervous system.


Histidine is also important for energy production in the human body. These amino acids engage in cellular metabolic processes and help the body produce energy from the food consumed. Histidine is also related to red blood cell formation, tissue growth and repair, and immune system function. Histidine deficiency can cause various health problems, like decreased growth, anemia, nervous disorders, and immune system problems. Histidine deficiency can also affect histamine synthesis and energy production in the body. However, histidine deficiency is so rare in society who eat a balanced and varied diet.


Foods that are high in histidine include the following:


  • Meat: Beef, chicken, and several other types of animal protein sources are rich in histidine. 100 grams of roast beef contains about 1220 mg of histidine.

  • Eggs: Eggs contain high histidine, especially in the egg white. One chicken egg contains about 89 mg of histidine.

  • Fish: Fish like tuna, salmon, and sardines are high in histidine. 100 grams of tuna contains about 1000 mg of histidine.

  • Milk and dairy products: Milk, cheese and yoghurt are high in histidine. 100 grams of cheddar cheese contains about 356 mg of histidine.

  • Nuts: Nuts like soybeans, almonds, and peas contain high levels of histidine. 100 grams of almonds contain about 829 mg of histidine.

  • Grains: Grains like rice, corn, and wheat are high in histidine. 100 grams of white rice contains about 163 mg of histidine.

  • Green vegetables: Green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and cabbage contain a fair amount of histidine. 100 grams of spinach contains about 97 mg of histidine.

Conclusion

L- Histidine is an essential amino acid that is important for a variety of bodily functions, including protein synthesis, energy production and cellular metabolism. Histidine also acts as a precursor for the synthesis of histamine, a neurotransmitter involved in the nervous system.

A deficiency of essential amino acids can cause health problems like decreased growth, decreased brain function, immune system disorders, and decreased hormone production. Therefore, it is important to include foods containing essential amino acids in the daily diet.
