As I mentioned in my first post, we’re expecting our very first litter in the next few days, so I thought it would be worth sharing the most important information about gerbil pregnancy.
What You Should Know About Gerbil Pregnancy
- Pregnancy usually lasts 24–26 days (sometimes 23–28). It’s really short!
- At the beginning it’s not easy to notice the belly. The female only starts to round up noticeably around day 15–18.
- A few days before giving birth, the female becomes more nervous, starts building a nest and may eat a little less.
- The average litter size is 4–6 pups, but it can range from 1 up to 10 or even more.
- Newborns are born completely hairless, blind and deaf – they look like tiny pink beans 😍 or little worms 😉
- They open their eyes around day 14–16 and start eating solid food around day 18–21.
- Mom usually takes great care of the babies, but it’s very important that the gerbils have peace and quiet, especially during the first two weeks.
- We don’t separate the male from the female during pregnancy and nursing – gerbils are very social, and the dad often helps with raising the young!
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the birth goes smoothly and the pups are healthy and strong. I’ll keep you updated with what’s happening in our “maternity ward”.

- Ciąża trwa zazwyczaj 24–26 dni (czasami 23–28). To naprawdę krótko!

- Na kilka dni przed porodem samiczka staje się bardziej nerwowa, buduje gniazdo i może jeść nieco mniej.
- Średnia wielkość miotu to 4–6 szczeniąt, ale zdarza się od 1 nawet do 10+.
- Noworodki rodzą się całkowicie nagie, ślepe i głuche – wyglądają jak malutkie różowe fasolki 😍 albo robaczki 😉
- Oczy otwierają około 14–16 dnia życia, a stały pokarm zaczynają jeść w okolicach 18–21 dnia.
- Mama zwykle świetnie opiekuje się maluchami, ale bardzo ważne jest by myszki miały spokuj, szczególnie przez pierwsze dwa tygodnie.
- Nie oddzielamy samca od samicy w czasie ciąży i karmienia – myszoskoczki są bardzo społeczne, a tata często pomaga przy wychowaniu młodych!
