If someone had told me I would have cats as pets 18 years ago I wouldn't have believed half a word of it. I considered myself pro-dog, until I met my first cat and everything changed.
Si alguien me hubiera dicho que tendría gatos como mascotas hace 18 años no le habría creído ni media palabra. Me consideraba pro perros, hasta que conocí a mi primera gata y todo cambio.
Les presento a mi gata la diosa griega Afrodita
It was 2007 and having a pet at home was unthinkable. My parents didn't want animals at home, however, there were already mice "little tenants" at home and they were doing their thing, it was at that moment when the proposal to bring a cat home came up, I decided to look for one that same weekend before they regretted it.
I talked to everyone I could and told them I was looking for a small cat, then my cousin told me that her grandmother was giving away kittens from a litter. I didn't hesitate and went to look for her right away.
We named the little cat Afrodita, after the Greek goddess of love. My brother chose the name because he loves to read about mythology and it seemed the most appropriate.
She is not exactly the most affectionate cat in the world, but she is very intelligent, independent and empathetic. She knows how to recognize when your mood is altered and lies on your lap as if she wants to help you regulate your emotions.
Era el año 2007 y tener una mascota en casa era impensable. Mis padres no querían animales en casa, sin embargo, ya habían
ratones“pequeños inquilinos” en casa y estaban haciendo de las suyas, fue en ese momento en que surgió la propuesta de traer un gato a casa, decidí buscar uno ese mismo fin de semana antes de que se arrepintieran.Hablé con todo el que pude y le comenté que estaba buscando un gato pequeño, entonces mi prima me comento que su abuela estaba regalando gatitos de una camada. No lo dude y fui a buscarla de inmediato.
La pequeña gata la llamamos Afrodita, como la diosa del amor griega. Mi hermano escogió el nombre porque le encanta leer sobre mitología y nos pareció el más adecuado.
No es precisamente la gata más cariñosa del mundo, pero si muy inteligente, independiente y empática. Sabe reconocer cuando tu estado de animo esta alterado y se acuesta en tu regazo como si quisiera ayudarte a regular tus emociones.
Un gato de la tercera edad
She is now 16 years old and a lazy little lady. In cat years she would be over 80 years old and spends most of the day sleeping.
She can't hear, hardly sees and has lost part of her teeth. Sometimes she seems lost in the same house, but what she does not forget is to eat every day at the same time.
Ya tiene 16 años y es toda una doñita perezosa. En años gatunos tendría más de 80 años y pasa la mayor parte del día durmiendo.
No oye, casi no ve y a perdido parte de sus dientes. En ocasiones parece perdida dentro de la misma casa, pero lo que si no olvida es comer todos los días a la misma hora.
Les presento a mi gata Lady Stark
Sansa arrived a few years later at our home. I had an appointment with my orthodontist and left the house early when I saw a little gray ball on the floor right next to the office.
I waited for a while to see if her mother would arrive, but she didn't. She had an infected eye and I didn't think she would survive long on her own on the street, I didn't have the heart to leave her there.
Sansa llego unos años después a nuestro hogar. Tenía cita con mi ortodoncista y salí temprano de casa cuando veo una bolita gris en el piso justo al lado del consultorio.
Espere un rato a ver si llegaba su madre, pero no ocurrió. Tenia un ojito infectado y pensé que no sobreviviría mucho tiempo sola en la calle, no tuve corazón para dejarla allí.
I couldn't have any more cats at home, I already had Afrodita so I looked for a foster home for her. The first years she lived with another family and by fate she came back to me. The family that had adopted her couldn't keep her at home anymore and she stayed at mine for a few days. The point is that she never left.
The origin of her name may seem quite obvious. In those days I had an obsession with the series Game of Thrones and even though Sansa Stark was not such a beloved character at that time, we chose her name for the little kitty.
No podía tener más gatos en casa,ya tenía a Afrodita así que le busque un hogar adoptivo. Los primeros años vivió con otra familia y por cosas del destino volvió a mí. La familia que la había adoptado no podía tenerla más en casa y paso a quedarse unos días en la mía. La cuestión es que nunca se fue.
El origen de su nombre puede parecer bastante obvio. Para esos días tenía una obsesión con la serie Juego de Tronos y a pesar de que Sansa Stark no era un personaje tan querido en aquel entonces, escogimos su nombre para la pequeña gatita.
She is very affectionate, but sometimes it seems that she has an anxious attachment and demands a lot of affection. She is somewhat fearful, but at the same time she has earned the nickname of "la malandra" because if she sees something wrong in the kitchen she doesn't forgive it and steals it.
It was difficult to get Aphrodite to adapt to the arrival of a new cat in the house, in fact, she became depressed and it was a difficult transition. At that time I had no experience in how to integrate a new cat member into the family.
Es muy cariñosa, pero a veces pareciera que tuviera apego ansioso y demanda mucho afecto. Es algo temerosa, pero al mismo tiempo se gano el apodo de “la malandra” porque si ve algo mal puesto en la cocina no lo perdona y se lo roba.
Fue difícil lograr que Afrodita se adaptara a la llegada de un nuevo gato en la casa, de hecho, se deprimió y fue una transición difícil. En aquel entonces no tenia experiencia en como integrar a un nuevo miembro gatuno en la familia.
In the early years there was sure to be a fight between the two over territory. Nowadays they don't fight anymore, but they never became friends.
Having a pet is quite a commitment and you have to take into account simple details such as whether you are going to spend a lot of time alone at home or if you are a frequent traveler. Now I really value the company of cats and their peculiar personality.
Los primeros años había pelea segura entre ambas por el territorio. Hoy en día ya no pelean, pero nunca llegaron a ser amigas.
Tener una mascota es todo un compromiso y se debe tener en cuenta detalles simples como si va a pasar mucho tiempo sola en casa o si sueles viajar con frecuencia. Ahora valoro mucho la compañía de los gatos y su peculiar personalidad.

Que lindo lo que hiciste por Sansa, me recuerda a lo que hice por mi gatito Bucky, que lo encontré en la calle y terminé adoptándolo... está muy grande, no tanto como sansa o afrodita, pero esta creciendo.
