Hello friends! Today I made homemade food for my cat Yuan for the first time and he liked it (hooray!), so I thought I would write a post about it. :)
Over the years, I tried various raw foods for Yuan, and with the kinda-sorta exception to some of the freeze dried ones from Stella & Chewys, he never liked them. In addition, Yuan is allergic to fish, and most homemade cat food recipes want you to add salmon oil to them, which would make him sick. I kept searching for what I should add instead that would make sure he got all his nutrients, and finally I found Alternative Nutrition. They have pre-made, all-in-one vitamins that have everything you need to add to make your own cat food, without fish! AND they have versions with added calcium for those of us who don't have a meat grinder to grind bones into the meat (that was another issue, most recipes insisted you have a meat grinder to grind up bones and all).
So, with proper vitamins finally at hand, I made him some noms!
I cooked up one pound of turkey, and a couple of pieces of beef liver that I cut up (it said 1/2 oz on the recipe, but I probably used a full ounce; I didn't weigh it, I just pulled a couple of pieces from the package). As I said, be never liked raw foods, so I just cooked it on the stove. I did check with the vitamin makers to see if I would need to adjust any ratios, and they said it was fine and to just make sure I included all the juices from cooking.
In a bowl while the meat cooled off a bit, I mixed the vitamin packet (conveniently packaged so that one packet equals one recipe batch) with 1/2 cup of water. This one was with eggshell calcium since I didn't include bones.
Then I mixed in the meat and juices. Time to see if Yuan likes it!

He likes it! I'm so glad.
Considering I gave him a large serving, he ate a lot of it right away!
So there was my adventure trying homemade cat food for Yuan. At this point I am still feeding him regular cat food too, but I reeeeally wanted to find something with how difficult it's been finding food he can eat sometimes with all the supply chain issues. This way, even if I can't find an allergy-friendly cat food at the store, I can just buy some ground meat and liver and make him some myself. It really helps me feel less worried when I see those sparse shelves in the canned cat food section!

Wowwww, I'm happy that I haven't experienced empty shelfs. Yes, the occasional products that are scarce every now and then, but we had options at least.

It's good that you were able to get the perfect recipe for Yuan and the best thing is that he liked it. Total hits. It's very bad when they are allergic because we don't know what can make them sick or what they can eat. I am very glad that you have a good love Yuan, it shows that you love a lot. Yes, it makes me feel so bad when he is sick. I know fish makes him ill but there is another ingredient that seems to set him off too and I haven't figured it out yet. I plan on making a list of ingredients of foods that I know made him sick, and trying to figure out what the common ingredient is. Hopefully I can figure it out that way.
