Some days ago, I stood in front of a #pawpaw tree and something caught my attention. The #soil around it had been washed away, and the root was already exposed. The first thought that came to my mind was, This tree will soon fall because the root is showing already. That simple picture made me think about life.
Just as rain, breeze and other activities remove the soil that protects a plant, life also brings things that can remove the good parts of our character. Negative friends, hardship, temptation, lack of discipline and bad habits can slowly erode who we are. It does not happen in one moment. It is a slow and quiet process.
The soil around a plant may look simple, but it plays a big role.
It covers the root.
It protects the root.
And once the soil is removed, the root becomes open and the whole plant becomes weak.
This is how our character works.
Character is like soil. It guards our values such as honesty, patience, discipline, kindness, respect and purity. When our character starts to wear away, our values also lose their strength. Most people do not fall because their values were weak, but because they allowed small cracks in their character.
Little lies, small compromises, wrong friends or careless living slowly wash away the soil of character.
But just like a farmer can add fresh soil to support a plant, we can build our character again by choosing better company, setting boundaries and practicing discipline.
The pawpaw tree taught me that what keeps us standing is not our height, but how well our roots are covered. Protect your soil, protect your character and protect your values.
