From the little I know about you, it sounds just typical that you'd take it upon yourself to create a mousery.
As a kid, my brother bred hamsters for sale to pet shops and built a huge intricate 'hamstery' in a large shed....until a glut of hamsters tanked the market.

I was trapped! What choice did I have? Turn them loose in the park, white mice? Not much camouflage there. They would last a nano second😅
