Welcome to Part 35 of "Document 13", a dystopian graphic novel I'm creating with my daughter. This week: "The story of Sam."

I'm not completely sure of the dialog in this scene. Would this be her reaction to meeting her mother? Is it a bit abrupt? Let me know what you think.

If you want to read the rest first, see the links below the post to catch up.

The year is 2074, the world has been plunged into darkness. One girl, Sarah Doe, will learn the secrets of the dark forces that run the ruined world. With the help of a few friends, her family, and her own powers she will fight to return the world to an order not known since well before her birth. Will she succeed? Read to find out!

Sarah hesitates but eventually relents. They walk back towards the group.

Maia: Sarah, I know you are upset with me, but it was all I could do to keep you safe from the Party. I didn’t think I would survive.... when I found the Resistance, it was too risky to save you.

Sar: They hurt me there! You left me in a prison!

Maia: I was young, not much older than you. I didn’t know about places like that. If I had known....

Sar: Why now?! Why are you here?

Woman 1: We lost a girl, about your age, in an accident. But then she came back. We think you might be special...

Sar: You think I might be special?

Woman 1: ...we want your help...

Sar: You only came to use me?

Woman 1: Why are you here?

Sar: I had to get out of that hell.... Ruby tried to save me. But I got caught and never made it. I only wanted to be saved, not used.

Maia: We think there are more like you. If so, it could mean a better future for all of us.

Sar: Ha! The only others I know are trained assassins. They work for the monster you left me with.

Woman 1: Come back with us to our village. Perhaps we can work this out.

Sar: Only if we take out Matthews first. We could bring all of the orphans with us.

Maia: Sarah, that is a fool’s errand. We only came to free you. We can free others once we organize.

Sar: You came because you wanted a super soldier… I wanted to escape the city and see the outside. I wanted to be free of slavery, but you just want to recruit me for your own desires. I will not be conscripted!

Maia: Sarah, if you help us we can free the world! You have never been above. You don’t know the full truth of the evil we are facing. The Party makes Matthews look like a Saint!

Sam: I remember it…

Sarah looks at him in shock.

Maia: When did you escape?

Sam: I was 15. The Party was just beginning the neuro implants. They learned that the best way to control the population was to sedate them with 24/7 virtual reality. They created an entire universe to keep the masses entertained while they continued with their decadent living off of the world below. The Party had solved the problem of scarcity. If the masses lived virtually, they didn’t need real property, just a plug and some nutrients siphoned in with a tube. Most of the citizens lined right up. It was easier to endure a loss of physical freedom than to endure the misery of life on a destroyed planet. Besides, once in the system they didn’t even know they weren’t free. Those who refused to get the implant were murdered. I couldn’t live in a fake world, so I fled.

Sar: You never told me that…. Why would you lie?

Sam: I try to forget that past. The Party murdered most of my family. When I finally got below I had no one and nothing. You were the first family that I had in fifteen years. And besides, it’s in the past. I can’t live there when today has its own worries.

Sar: Oh Sam, I’m so sorry….

Maia: Sarah, life is bigger than ourselves. We must live for others. It doesn’t matter if one of us is free if others are in bonds. We don’t seek to recruit you for our ends alone, we want you to be truly free. But we cannot do it rashly. We cannot rush into the city without preparing. We will free the orphanage one day, but only when we know we will succeed.

Sarah hugs Sam and cries softly.

Sar: I will go.

They all start the journey back through the tunnel.
