Teaching about good nutrition is necessary given the high mortality rates of cardiovascular diseases, many of which have her basis on hypertension.
On the other hand, the increase in obesity and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents leads to the urgent intervention by nutrition specialists to propose actions through educational programs to form healthy eating habits in this population, not only because they are our generation of relief but also because children are drivers of changes in intra-family habits.

One of the strategies to be used at school to educate about good nutrition is the "School Garden",an activity that works objectives based on crosscutting occupying several areas of social interest such as awakening in children the responsibility to take care of our environment, where plants play a vital role, as well as appreciating plants as providers of food substances necessary for man to be healthy.
In the following sequence of images, I want to show you the development of the "School Garden" project in an educational institution.

At the end of the school period, we were able to measure the impact of the "School Garden" on eating habits through individual consumption surveys conducted to students and their representatives, presenting the following conclusions:
- Working as a team to plant and cultivate some vegetable species turned out to be satisfactory since it helped that the children to know which parts of the plant corresponded to the food they consumed, understanding that paprika was the fruit, lettuce leaves, and potatoes part of the root of these.
- The collaborative work of caring for and watering the "School Garden" regularly led them to develop a sense of responsibility and companionship to the point of increasing their collaboration at home for the simple preparation of some preparations such as vegetable salads and fruit juices.
- A significant percentage of children began to incorporate new foods into their diets, many of which were rejected initially by them, such as carrots, onions, and some legumes.
- The students' representatives modified their purchasing and food consumption patterns towards acquiring more fruit instead of processed juices and snacks for snacks.
We hope to continue with activities of this type that promote healthy eating in the population, as it will be a milestone to prevent diseases, especially in children and adolescents.

This is so good to see all the children gardening together. It is so beneficial on so many level it is wonderful. In a childcare i worked they had a program called garden on your plate. And they had a beautiful garden where the children could pick and see the veggies growing and then they created a recipe with the harvest. I think this is awesome😊
Oh thank you very much for your comment. This School Garden program was divided into several stages, first the planting, then the harvesting and finally the preparation of healthy dishes. Thank you very much for visiting my blog.
