My short, unbiased observation on comparing Hive v/s Medium

I'm a user of both Hive and Medium (not under this name), and here are my observations.
I started using Hive around 2 weeks back.

I've covered the advantages and disadvantages of both of them, keeping a neutral (yet critical) bias on both.

I saw this tweet
which triggered me to document this :)

Advantages of Hive:

  1. You are in control of your posts, keys, and wallets
  2. You get rewarded if people like your content and upvotes you, in the native Hive token.
  3. It is censorship resistant, your posts remain on the blockchain
  4. Many DApps are being built on top of Hive, ecosystem is growing rapidly
  5. Anyone can read your content, even if they dont have an account on Hive.
  6. You can connect your own blog, hosted on your own domain, through third party (like steempress).
    There's also another DApp called Engrave, which is allowing you to maintain your own simple blog.

Disadvantages of Hive:

  1. Not Newbie friendly (though it is becoming more user friendly over time)
  2. If you lose keys, you cant recover your account (But thats what crypto is all about :) )
  3. Room to grow, when it comes to SEO (though I feel they are doing great!)

Advantages of Medium:

  1. User friendly
  2. Established, and mainstream
  3. Optimised SEO
  4. A huge number of talented content creators are out there who post on regular basis

Disadvantages of Medium:

  1. You dont get paid to produce content (But you can publish stories to get paid)
  2. Users not having accounts cant read more than 3 articles until they sign in/sign up
  3. It can be censored. (I have seen a few 'sensitive' articles being taken down)

In the end, I feel, both the platforms are very good in their own respective areas. :)
