I mentioned in a post last week that I unfollowed quite alot of people because they had not posted since 2024. There were a few names that stood out as witnesses who I kept following because I thought these guys are running the show so I don't want to miss out if they have anything important to say. I don't frequent Discord much but I know this is where most of the Hive governance takes place so I tuned into the witness town hall meeting on Wednesday to see if anything is coming down the tracks. This is the first meeting I have listened into since the Steem days and I was surprised just how quiet it was in there. There were more non-witnesses than witnesses but it wasn't like old times having 100 people listening. Many couldn't make it. That was fine. We all have lives to live. I only tuned in for a few minutes myself but the section I did hear was there were a couple of people bleating on that I have never heard of in my life before. I looked them up and one of them last posted in 2024 and haven't been seen on the blockchain all year. You would swear they were running the show the way they were going on. But maybe they are!
Now not many witnesses drop by my page. You should, I'm great craic, but the ones who do I vote for. You know who you are. For me the witness role is like that of a local election candidate. Vote for me please. Why? What are you going to do for me? If a witness interacts with the Hive Community I find that positive because they are in their constituency doing the work so to speak. They are present. Now I am not asking them to post daily , not even weekly but I do like to know if they have been around this year! What are they up to? What projects are they working on? When is the release date of your new game Lintersands? How did the conference go you were at? Was the meal nice? How many would you say you onboarded? Is this too much to ask? If they leave the blockchain then I can give some other Hive witness my vote and I say best of luck. Enjoy your life. No harm done.

- In the top 20 only @ocd , @arcange, @themarkymark and @therealwolf have been posting on Hive consistently in 2025 (over 20 posts in 2025). Fair play to ye lads. Also hats off to @ocd , @oflyhigh ,@dalz, @edicted @solominer , @aliento , @hivebuzz, @detlev and @leofinance who post very regularly and make the rest of the witnesses look like an Uncle who left 20 years ago in a VW camper and left two kids behind him never to be seen again. sob

Can anyone check if @jesta is still with us? Or has he turned into the new Japanese new travel authentication system? Last post was in 2019 and he is still a coveted top 30 witness.
Also @anyx last comment was 2 years ago. Have they left this world? As Murray once said on Flight of the Conchords. "They maybe did" . @anyx is 24th on the witness list. This raises a question about governance. Sometimes people tend to not change their votes so does this mean we will have ghost witnesses running Hive?? Long John Silver buried with all his HP. Cleopatra buried with her crown and gold? How does Hive handle a witnesses that has not been around for a long time if they have a large vote to make it top 30. We could be all sitting at a table with ghosts. I would not be a happy camper to be witness number 25 with a few ghosts ahead of me. What did you say? Actifit is witness number 25? It's funny. I was under the impression @someguy123 was always around but you learn something new every day. Now I remember last year there was a big debate about the role of a witness. Some think their sole job is to secure blocks so you can go run and jump if they think I'm gonna do one of them post things for our blogging platform.
"Wash your dirty stinking mouth out @blanchy, I've a button to style in CSS tailwind this month, you bum".
Some like me think they should be present and a major part of the Community. This is why Witnesses point out what projects they are working on which is good. But I doubt the consensus is happy with them not being near the blockchain for 5 bloody years.
Is there not a responsibility on the Hive user to make sure that the witnesses are present and correct? I would have thought so. Especially witnesses voting witnesses , I would have thought there would be even more of a responsibility to do so.
Anyway this part is very important and we are coming to the end of yet another controversial but factual post. Can every witness that reads this post upvote it 100% please so I can tick you off as still being present on the blockchain and not dead. No exceptions, this is very important. It will be like a consensus of such that we will do every year. Thank you very much.

Fortunately we now have expirations for witness votes. I've noticed quite a big shift in the top 20 recently, a lot more movement which is nice to see. I also noticed a lot of witnesses either never post or very rarely interact. But I've considered that maybe they are just quiety creating/maintaining things they've created.
Regarding Discord: I think basically every Hive related discord is just a ghost town. I think people just got a bit bored of Discord and moved on. I'm one of those people that once frequented many servers but ended up leaving almost every single one. There isn't really much point in being in them. Most just hop in to share links in a sharing channel and leaving.
And given how small the developments on Hive really are, it doesn't surprise me that people can't be bothered to pop in and listen to a group of people talk about fixing a few backend bugs. It's not like we're all salivating, at the edge of our seats waiting to get the latest gossip on the next big feature anymore.

I mostly stopped posting due to a lot of reasons I won't get into. I do comment a lot though. I'm not offended if people don't post, I am however not a fan of those who have pretty much left Hive and just collect.

You know, I'm somewhat of an aspiring witness myself. I am not a hot shot developer or computer science man. I just want the magic of a hive witness node running in my own home - and to champion great quality content. The fact that it will be in my literal house (the hardware running it) - fills me with a few things - the warmth of a target on my back should anything go wrong with my campaign to get a node up and running - and a fear that my node won't be very stable.
I won't be writing witnessy things, and I probably have nothing to "add" to the chain outside of of my own content and another low tier validator, but I believe in decentralisation, so I am gonna make it work, or struggle so much and get discouraged.

I'm more of a Boris Johnson style witness m'self. I do, however, somewhere; have a coin with Churchill's form stamped on it. It is amazing how far currency has come from metal discs to spinning bits to clout.
In our case, a deeper look would help. We have been posting from other accounts but progress has been made, just not in the form of a blog or a simple curation project.
We have been head down building the Hive P2P dapp, that many Cubans has been using for months to exchange HIVE or HBD without moving the price of both and without fee costs. We also introduce recently Hive Cash, a way to transfer HBD offline for those moments when the electricity and the internet doesn't exist like we just experience two days ago in Cuba. A new landing site is coming soon too. Check @ertytux and @manuphotos for more.
Maybe we just need to add some username to the description of the HiveCuba witness node, but we figure ppl would think those accounts will be getting the funds produce by the witness, and the reality is different. We can also post more about all of this with a summary on the month, but we feel it would be redundant. All feedback is welcome so let me know what you think.
I just looked at the account that are named as witness. Maybe instead of adding the names to the account , post from the @hivecuba hivecuba account just like @aliento and @ocd do. Might be easier to keep track of then. But its all the one to me. I am just glad you are still active.

I will here echo your sentiments. I have to note, though, that witnesses that have been comfortably ensconced in their cushy roles for some years have little to gain from posting polarizing comments. I bet every time witnesses post they lose a few votes. They probably also gain a few, too, or they'd eventually fall off the roster, but if they say nothing they probably can count on their support remaining steady as she goes. That being said, I see that every time some of them post they are flagged and excoriated by haters. Them that post regularly despite knowing that will happen clearly have interest in engagement that outweighs our natural aversion to being raged at, which I suppose is commendable.
That doesn't excuse them from staying atop of things, and keeping their supporters in the loop as things change, but it's a pretty strong disincentive from blathering on about things regularly that half their supporters might take offense at and the usual suspects will use as an opportunity to criticize them. It's understandable from their perspective that unless there's some significant change to discuss, the less they say the better, until they're approaching lower rankings because support has been falling off.

😂 Believe me I'm the first one to agree there with the flowers and the ladybirds but that doesn't mean an update post every once in a while would kill them. I'm not asking for the James Joyces Book of Ulysses here. Just a.short update about witness stuff. Is it too much to ask? The worst that can happen is some tin foil helmet downvoting them.
Witnesses get rewarded handsomely for protecting the chain. As Roy Keane says in when a goalkeeper makes a save. "That's your job"! I guess the ideal outcome is the Community should demand and be responsible for their own witness vote and if they want to keep a guy that hasn't been on the blockchain for years in the top 30 witnesses then this should be questioned.
The rewards are not as handsome as you think. Far from what other chains do but certainly better than posting pictures of flowers.

STOPWhile some are quite active in different places like mattermost or discord, I also wish they'd be a bit more active, maybe on snaps at least (if they even know what those are yet). Some I understand why they aren't that active, like blocktrades, as I believe they really are that busy coding and upgrading the network to be able to post and interact too much on off-topic stuff, while some seem to barely be around really or active on other chains.
Worst imo are some who barely even do updates about their active funded proposals.
Now that’s a world I want to steer clear of . 🤣. But seriously , a bit more activity would be great even from the big dog although he does post an odd time and when he does , everyone reads it . . Everybody’s got time. Put it in the diary . 30 minutes every quarter . Surely to god they can do that!!

This is one of the elephants in the room.
In the not-too-distant past, I used to take some of the things that happen on Hive (like the one you're talking about) personally.
Hive is very important to me and has been one of the most present and important things in my life for the last 8 years.
My friends even made me a sticker with the title “Have I told you about Hive?”
Call me pessimistic, but it makes me very sad to see that for most people, Hive is simply a chain to “ extract” from and valueplan is one of the best proofs.
I believe that either we create economic incentives to build here, or we are already doomed.
I think you are one of many that Hive is more than just a blockchain. I can see the die hards and most active in here are the middle class 50,000 to 200,000 HP . I think some of these users need to maybe join forces like a government party and start having more of a voice .
