I think it was less of a hack and more of an outright theft. The people who got them the data for money are willing accomplices. More a case of corporate espionage. The offending group just happens to be a bit more nefarious than usual.

The system shouldn't allow mass extraction of sensitive information without authorisation. So it was a system failure.
