I have had a ton of comments on the post and one of them is very close to what I am going to suggest as a possible way to help improve the situation caused by "Contests".

Education is almost always the answer but how it is done is very important :)

You can get some great feedback on Hive from smart people. We are pioneers of new economic models and there are bound to be issues. It's interesting to see it all evolve.
